A Tracy woman pleaded guilty today to charges that she murdered 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, a surprise move in a case that garnered national attention.
Appearing in San Joaquin County Superior Court, Melissa Huckaby, 29, entered her plea to murder with a special circumstance for kidnapping, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Himelblau. Huckaby faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when she is sentenced June 14 by Judge Linda Lofthus.
Huckaby's plea in a Stockton courtroom took place at what had been scheduled as a procedural hearing in advance of a trial set for this fall. Prosecutors had been urging for the case to move along since the Sunday school teacher's arrest in April 2009.
In exchange for her plea, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty and dropped other charges, including child endangerment and furnishing a harmful substance for allegedly drugging a 7-year-old girl and a man in the months before Sandra died.

Child killers tend to get special treatment from other prisoners.
And, the best medical care in the world.
Hope she dies in prison,
I can't quite wrap my brain around that concept this early in the week.
Probably a more accurate term would be sexual assault.
For someone this twisted, there is no reason good enough to keep them breathing.
Penetration with a foriegn object also meets the definition of rape.
Another proud contributor to the freak show that is San Francisco.
There shouldn’t be an option in cases like this...she should be dead. But what in the world would have motivated her? Women simply don’t commit crimes like this, generally (although a friend in law enforcement told me that an increasing number of child molesters are women...who get into it through watching porn flicks with their boyfriends).
Unless their boyfriends are watching Kiddie Porn, which would get them a long prison sentence, I don't see the connection. Could you elaborate or is this along the lines of a marijuana-leads-to-heroin type of comparison?
Apparently child porn is the new kool thing. That’s why people keep getting busted with hundreds of hideous photos on their computers. Just because it’s illegal doesn’t mean it’s non-existent. Some of the people who “trade” it do so literally by trading, others make a tidy sum off it. And you’d be surprised and revolted to find out who some of these people ae (mostly married, often have children of their own whom they may or may not have molested, and sometimes work as teachers or in other positions that give them access to children, including things such as health professionals).
I don’t know what makes people get into things like that; I’d say it probably is a bit like drugs, though, because they have often started with standard issue porn, find that it is no longer very exciting, and then they move on to other things, including child porn. I think it’s probably very hard to understand their mentality - although I will say, it’s even harder to understand the mentality of their wives, who sometimes know and almost always suspect what’s going on. A lot of times these are sort of dishrag type women, very submissive, who probably don’t feel they’re entitled to complain or are afraid that he will leave them if they do.
