NJ.com is reporting Gov. Chris Christie is proposing a package of legislation Monday that would place a permanent 2.5 percent limit on annual raises for public workers.
Affecting police, firefighters and teachers, the proposal would allow towns to discard civil service rules governing employee hiring and firing, the report said.
Further, the 33-bill package would direct administration officials to study raising the retirement age, reviewing contributions to health benefits and pensions, and keeping new hires out of the pension system, the report said.

There was an article posted (maybe two weeks ago) that noted that the majority of NJ townships voted down school budget increases.
I think New Jersey has smaller government fever. Or at least this is an indication that the voters of NJ want to give Christie's approach a try.
There's usually a reduced payout, by formula according to years of service and age. Also, a cap on maximum hours allowed to accumulate from year to year. That's what happened in my case when I retired. I was losing over a hundred hours a year because I maxed out and rarely called in sick (allowed 13 sick days per year). I donated my time to other employees with severe illness who had depleted their sick time.
Was just thinking the same thing. Having been near the 400 lb. mark at one point in my life, I know how hard it is to be taken seriously. This guy has serious chops in the political office, but if he wants a run at the presidency, he needs to be physically appealing to the voting masses. Those of us here on FR are one group, but the majority of the voting public is very "image oriented."
If Mike Huckabee can do it (lose hundreds of pounds), Christie can do it.

I think it would actually be better to peg their wages to those in the private sector. Of course that data muight not be that easy to come up with on a job-by-job basis.
Really, 2.5% is pretty generous in this employment climate.
Time will tell. Even Sarah Palin has moderated her positions lately. I’m still waiting for a real Conservative to come along.
Christie will be up to it in his eyes in next election . He might get elected, but the people with $$ are leaving the state in droves. He can be a master of the feudal farm.

Christie ran the length of his campaign on a single-term governorship. He knew damn well that slash & burn would insure no chance of re-election, but would allow him to deliver on the hard remedies NJ needs to get turned around.
