What can Brown do for you?

Resign, that’s what.

To facilitate a deal between Labour and the Lib-Dems. Amazing that the Tories might be denied the prime ministry after such impressive gains.

From Sky News
In a statement outside Downing Street, Mr Brown said he had "no desire to stay in my position longer than needed" and would leave by the party conference in September.

He said he will ask the Labour Party to begin the process for a leadership election but that he will not stand or intervene.

He will have left the role by the September party conference, he added.

Mr Brown said the fact there was a hung parliament suggested no party or leader had the support of the electorate to govern alone.

"The reason that we have a hung parliament is that no single party or single leader was able to win support.

"As leader of my party I must accept that that is a judgement on me," he said.

Labour and Liberal Democrat negotiators are now set to hold formal negotiations over whether they could form an alliance.

Douglas Alexander told Sky News that Mr Brown and Mr Clegg had spoken on the phone moments before the Prime Minsiter's speech to confirm the Lib Dems' desire to hold discussions.

It comes as the Conservative and Lib Dems held a further day of talks in an attempt to thrash out a power-sharing deal.

Moments after Mr Brown's announcement, the pound fell more than a cent against the dollar.

“It comes as the Conservative and Lib Dems held a further day of talks in an attempt to thrash out a power-sharing deal.”

The Lib Dems are playing both sides, smart strategy, they continue to negotiate with the Tories all the while talking to senior Labour members on the side. The Tories are being pressured to give up more than they want to in order to gain power, and Labour is being forced to do the same in a desperate bid to stay in power. I hope Cameron makes a credible effort to form a government with the Lib Dems, but he should hold the line because the Tories were the only ones of the three big parties to pick up seats (90+). A Labour/Lib Dem coalition will be a government of two losers with no mandate whatsoever, there would be another election in 6 months to a year.

What happened to the Good Old Days, when they started packing as soon as the results were in?

Which year? LOL, four months away? That’s just silly.

The people have spoken Brown. Step down within thirty days and be done with it.

The main news in this is Labour and the Lib Dems are to begin talks to form a Coalition of the Failing. I hope that, if such a deal is made, it will reflect so badly on both parties that they will be toast when an election is called within two years or so (we will see how long they can cling on at the first by-election that comes along)

Its no different. The results are in, but they are not decisive (not like they used to be). Its another indication of just how fractured society is.

If not for Scotland, it would have been a rout for the Tories.

It seems unlikely, frankly, that the liberals can form a working coalition with the Conservatives. Politically they are far closer to the Labour party, even though labour is now less powerful in Parliament. As a result, Labour is going to have to offer the Liberals an awful lot, and one thing they were always going to have to offer was Gordon Brown's resignation. This is the first step in this process.

The only problem is that even with the Liberals on board, Labour is going to struggle to form a majority. They will have to bring other parties into the coalition. Those parties will probably have to be the nationalists. Yes they will have to cut cards with the devil himself. How can you form a coalition "for the good of the country" by allying yourself with people who, fundamentally, want to destroy the country?

Does that mean he has made a deal with LibDems to stay in power?
