Holder: Feds may sue over Arizona immigration law
By the CNN Wire Staff
May 9, 2010 2:06 p.m. EDT

Washington (CNN) -- Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday that the Justice Department was considering a federal lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration law.

"We are considering all of our options. One possibility is filing a lawsuit," Holder told NBC's "Meet the Press." Possible grounds for the lawsuit would be whether the Arizona law could lead to civil rights violations, he said.

The recently enacted Arizona law initially allowed police to ask anyone for proof of legal U.S. residency, based solely on a police officer's suspicion that the person might be in the country illegally. Arizona lawmakers soon amended the law so that officers could check a person's status only if the person had been stopped or arrested for another reason.

Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants.

In Arizona, the city councils of Tucson and Flagstaff have decided to challenge the new immigration law in court.

Holder told ABC's "This Week" program that one concern about the Arizona law is that "you'll end up in a situation where people are racially profiled, and that could lead to a wedge drawn between certain communities and law enforcement, which leads to the problem of people in those communities not willing to interact with people in law enforcement, not willing to share information, not willing to be witnesses where law enforcement needs them."

With the terror trials, immigration... Holder keeps going to the news and saying:

“We may do this, we may do that...”

It is starting to sound like a broken record.

Well in the case of terrorism he seems to be telling Pakistan that they better stop terrorists because we can’t get lucky forever.

Holder repeatedly whining about possible lawsuits is like the guy telling Tuco why he is going to shoot him.

You never solve any crime if you’re looking for an Asian in a sedan and go around pulling over Asians in pickup trucks.

Between the ages of about 22 and 32, I didn't fit any sort of visual criminal profile, but I got pulled over for "driving while black" more times than I can shake a stick at.

One one occasion in particular, I nearly lost my life to a cop who was so angry and disturbed, that his fellow officers had to physically hustle him away from me to defuse the situation.

I accepted their apology continued on my way to work, but that incident really shook me up.

If this was not so serious, I’d say LOL.

By whom? Profiling solely on the basis of race has never been "good police work".

They always identify the race when they are looking for someone. In this case we know we are looking for 12 million Mexican illegals in all shape and sizes.

Sorry, the ACLU is over at the bathhouses protecting the right of Glory Holes to exist.

Not likely any of those people are going to get messed up with little girls or something.

I had a cop pull a gun on me once because he was looking for someone who apparently looked like me and was known to frequent the area I was in.

Why doesn’t he sue sanctuary cities? Same thing, except sanctuary cities are BREAKING federal law.

"could lead to a wedge drawn between certain communities and law enforcement"

I see nothing wrong with a wedge between criminals and law abiding citizens.....

Profiling purely on the basis of race is what I was talking about. You said that, "racial profiling was once considered good police work." I contend that it isn't. You need a whole lot more profiling indicators to work with, than race alone.

I 100% agree with race being one of a series of profiling points. That's simply good horse sense.

In the case of profiling for illegal aliens, there are lots of telltale indicators, if you know what to look for; race being just one of them. Anyone who's lived in the Southwest US for any appreciable length of time can profile for illegal aliens with a pretty high degree of accuracy.

Oh, this is an absolute godsend.

I hope they file a lawsuit.

This will mean a swept Conservative GOP in the House and Senate for 2010 with massive Democrat seat loss (an possible "Impeachment Congress"), and the recapture of the Presidency in 2012 for the Republic. I mean it. They will really urinate in the wind with this brilliant move. Please pull the federal legal trigger . Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOOOO ITTTTTTT!!!!!

Their stupidity is showing. This just reinforces the fact that none of them have a clue what they’re doing. Heck, none of read the bills they pass, why should they be familiar with the federal laws?

They are acting stupidly.

Arizona should be suing the Federal Government for failure to enforce the laws of this country.

Only because Eric Holder is a racist POS who’s too much a coward to uphold the law.

Yeah - I'm wondering what that hack does besides being a placeholder, breathing up oxygen and taking up room on our dime. There doesn't seem to be any direct work output going on at his office. Some individuals I know have ran work through his office repeatedly and they have yet to ever receive a written yes-no-maybe acknowledgement. At least the FBI will write back concerning status, but his office? Thuppfff! - always nothing.
