There were shiny six-shooter revolvers, polished wooden rifles, semiautomatic handguns, pistols, rifles and even two hand grenades.
In a citywide effort Saturday to try to curb the violence on Chicago streets, police collected more than 4,000 guns and other weapons in exchange for gift cards worth up to $100.
Residents frustrated by the gun violence that has long plagued their neighborhoods marched through the streets, many of them bereaved mothers who recited poems, sang songs and prayed for an end to the shooting.
"No mother should have to bury a son," said Vallie Smith, whose son, Mario Hines, 21, was shot to death in March. Hines had been arrested in 2007 for illegally carrying a handgun himself.

What pains me about the buy-backs, though, besides the sheer stupidity of the whole thing, is that I also suspect that some fine weapons get destroyed that way. Some which were stolen, and even some that someone may have "brought back from the war" and his widow is afraid of it and doesn't know what to do with it, or some that are just "Grandpa's old guns" that no one in the family is interested in.
Like the Journalist's Guide, BTW!
>I’ve been given junkers like that by relatives who didn’t want them around. Me neither, especially since they couldn’t be salvaged. I’d either crush part of the frame in a big vise, or cut through it with a milling machine. Then into the trash, where someone might get a momentary thrill, or shock, until they realize what was done.
And you could have gotten $100 a poop instead!
{PS — I like that pic.}
Chicago is the poster city for community organizers. Look at how organized their communities are; Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings...
no problem for them now, 4050 honest, law abiding people turn in their guns, should pretty much take care of the crime problems there.........how can people think like this??
Besides the hand grenades, which police said were inert, some people handed in dusty antique rifles, while others gave up their high-performance rifles. Some of the guns collected are so deadly, they could pierce bulletproof vests, Weis said.
I have a bolt action .30-06 that will do that, too. It used to be that reporters made fun of stupid political hacks, but nowadays it seems the stupid political hacks have cause to make fun of the reporters.
Nice going Chicago. Next maybe you can try and turn back the tide with a teaspoon. Retards...

And no freeman should ever have to even consider burying his guns.
These girls are going to be in some serious stuff when “daddy” comes home and finds his gun is gone.
This man is stuck on stupid.
damn.. .I really need to buy up all the non-functional/crappy guns in my area for like $20 each, then take a road trip up to chicago! anyone else want in? :p
Maybe there IS a "legitimate" use for these stupid gun buybacks. Instead of going through all the work you mention, why not just save them up for a trip to the next buyback in whatever major city near you has one? If they are indeed "no questions asked" it might be a good way to score some extra cash.
He is also a wannabe tyrant. He has a security detail consisting of armed people. If he believes that there are "too many guns" around then he should immediately have his security team give them up.
Of course, the real blame lies with the majority of voters in Chicago who keep re-electing sleazebags like this election after election.
You sure it was not an AK-47? LOL.
