A proposal to build a mosque steps from Ground Zero received the support of a downtown committee despite some loved ones of 9/11 victims finding it offensive.
The 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center was unanimously endorsed by the 12-member Community Board 1's financial district committee.
The $100 million project, called the Cordoba House, is proposed for the old Burlington Coat Factory building at Park Place and Broadway, just two blocks from the World Trade Center site.
"I think it will be a wonderful asset to the community," said committee Chairman Ro Sheffe.
Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf, who helped found the Cordoba Initiative following the 9/11 attacks, said the project is intended to foster better relations between the West and Muslims.
...Daisy Khan, executive director of the Cordoba Initiative, said donations from prestigious groups such as the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund would pay for the construction.

If the trade unions said,’no way will our members build it,’will the thing still be built?
I think you figures are low It must be in the 250,000 range to wake them up
“Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached”
if NYC lets it happen then they deserve Islam.
Hell it will be named after the SOAK
Why do I get the feeling this issue isn’t over?
I look on this as a slap in the face to the families whose loved ones perished in the world trade center.

The first Mosque in the US powered by it’s own plutonium reactor.
When I think or hear of this why do I think of Kerry Fisher in The Blues Brothers with that rocket launcher?????
Beware of any politician who says they're the only one capable of doing something.
My pocket full of bacon bits will accidentally have a hole in it when I walk near there.
And flicking pork fat so that it sticks to the walls is probably doable too, under the guise of trying to butter a bagel out in front of the place.

Someone should discover an ‘endangered’ species on the site and declare it a protected habitat.
I shouldn’t laugh, but that Statue of Liberty pic with the burka is hilarious.
Better to build an outhouse.
You know, you have a point there. I'd be interested to see if any of the usual bureaucratic nonsense that usually happens when you try to build anything in the city was somehow magically smoothed over to allow this. I mean for the love of God, look how long it's taken to get anything else built on the site of the WTC.
Thats just what my brother in law said.
It sounds like the same people who ran our country down are doing the same thing over the Water, yet another indication of the way Islam is poisoning the way Western societies live.
In parts of England like-minded people have formed a group called the English Defence League. We meet up and kick off with Islamics who abuse our troops at coming home parades from Afgn. Some of us show up and cause aggro at sites for new mosques (most of which seem to be exempt from planning permission).
I should point out that I do not condone violence nor am I suggesting that hundreds of Freepers meet up in Battery Park spoiling for a ruck.
What you could do is a lot of low level stuff ie. disrupt delivery of materials if construction goes ahead, phone the emergency services every day saying worshippers have been spotted with suspicious packages etc.
At the very least, demonstrate every day next to the site. Cause enough outcry and disruption and even the politically correct powers will have to listen.
