A third-grader at Brazos Elementary was given a weeks detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher.
School officials in western Fort Bend County are defending the seemingly harsh sentence. The schools principal and superintendent said they were simply complying with a state law that limits junk food in schools.
But the girls parents say its a huge overreaction. I think its stupid to give a kid a weeks worth of detention for a piece of candy, said Amber Brazda, the girls mother. "The whole thing was just ridiculous to me."
Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice.
According to the disciplinary referral, she would be separated from other students during lunch and recess through Friday.
Jack Ellis, the superintendent for Brazos Independent School District, declined an on-camera interview. But he said the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned minimal nutrition foods.
Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules, he said.
The state, however, gives each school discretion over how to enforce the policy. Ellis said school officials had decided a stricter punishment was necessary after lesser penalties failed to serve as a deterrent.
Ellis said failing to adhere to the states guidelines could put federal funding in jeopardy.
According to the Texas Department of Agricultures website, The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy (TPSNP) explicitly states that it does not restrict what foods or beverages parents may provide for their own children's consumption.

“Public schools in the US are doomed unless the NEA and teachers unions are destroyed...”
I agree. The teachers unions are the most destructive force in American society today.
Why do you assume that the parents are not married? The girl could have a father from her mother’s first marriage. Does this make the step-mother a “pig,” as you called her? Also, there are married women who go by their maiden names, while their kids have their fathers’ names.
Hey tax-chick, I see you picked up on Mark Steyn’s line from today’s piece. It was very good!
can’t have the people thinking they can eat whatever they want. Next they will be think they can think for themselves too
Get your kids out of public school. Grandparents, you may have to help. But get your kids out of the hands of these people.
The kids parental status has nothing to do with the story.
There are so many good lines in the average Mark Steyn article that it’s hard to select one ... but this fit in the tagline field ;->.
And no thoughtful parent should place their child in what is a well-documented failed experiment.
I kept mine the same legally, too. Socially, people know me by my husband's last name. But, legally, my surname is still my maiden name. When we married, it made sense to keep it. Now I wish I'd changed it.
But, it's just a personal preference, and I never understood why people make such a big deal about it. I know lots of women, many of them conservatives, who also kept their maiden names when they married, and they use those names socially.
Look for my next post on this thread responding to the original poster.
I know a family with three different surnames. The parents each have different surnames, and some of the children have a third surname. I suppose someone would make assumptions about it. The fact is, the mother was widowed from her first marriage, and eventually she remarried but returned to her maiden name. She didn’t want her first children to feel alienated being the only ones with a different last name in the family.
So, you see, you cannot make assumptions based on names.
Is that what’s wrong with you? ;)
LOL it gets worse.
How worse?
My mother then worked for head start for 20 years.
“My mother then worked for head start for 20 years.”
LOL, but here you are, safe & sound.
Just stay away from the candy!
The only way to change this in the Fort Bend schools is to overturn the Board.
And then fire the Supervisor.
Rehire a good one and fire the principal.
wow. head start has been around that long?
are you going to tell me next your mom was, a Democrat?
Head Start has been around since 1965.
My mother left after it became just another government money toilet.
