Is the purpose of the Taser to disable people who are verbally combative? The Taser is suppose to be a less-than-lethal alternative application of force. Could anyone argue that the next level of force to remove a drunk fan and unarmed fan would be to shoot him?

The Taser might have it's useful purposes, but it's liberal use is troubling, IMHO.

Couldn’t just club him, slice or give him the birdie?

That’s one heck of a cover charge to pay to drink.

if he resisted arrest I say taser the guy.. why should a cop take a chance of getting belted in the mouth by a drunken dumbass?

Yes, in the good old days, 2 or 3 applications of nightstick would have gotten the job done. Of course, pre-taser, cops were more likely to be roughed up in the course of subduing obnoxious drunks. As a taxpayer, I’d just as soon not have to foot the bill for worker’s comp claims.

I don’t know, it says he was carrying on for quite a while...getting sucker punched by a drunk shouldn’t be part of anyones job description, either...I’ve caught a few in certain situations from drunks and it sucks. I think I would be pretty careful with someone drunk and disorderly - especially on a GOLF COURSE for cripes sake...probably not a casual drinker. And I’m betting this isn’t his first times. Just a guess. I always thought that Tasers are God’s way of telling you to STFU...and get sober.

some people just need taserin’. I’m pro taser. To me it seems simple. Don’t be a jerk in public, don’t break laws, and chances are you won’t get tased.

That is only one purpose of a taser, the other purpose is to safely take someone is resisting arrest into custody without physical contact required to subdue the person.

Physical contact is dangerous for the person being arrested and the officers.

This should be an obvious. This is the reason that tasers are so popular today in comparison to less than lethal only weapons such as bean bag rounds, mace, tear gas, etc..

Taser pain is between a bee sting and a wasp sting. Your imagination that this pain is like a cattle prod is just wrong. You should volunteer to get tased at least twice so you separate what you imagine vs reality.

I heard, on either Fox or ABC news, one day that police are using tasers like cattle prods to herd people for crowd control.

"Officers responded and attempted to calm Parmelee down, but they said he became more combative."

That doesn't sound like liberal use of a taser to me.

Drunken taunting of authority should result in PAIN.

We once had to taser a guy in his parents apartment simply because he said, "There is no way I'm coming with you. You're gonna have to fight me."

Long story short, ZAP!, and he was in an ambulance 5 minutes later and he was fine. Just dazed. And he gave us zero problems after that.

Being tasered at a golf match fit this drunk to a “TEE!”

First of all there is a huge difference between being shot with the darts and merely being "drive stunned" as in this case. A drive stun to the body is far less painful and causes far less injury then a strike from a baton or being pepper sprayed for that matter. Having experienced them all in training I would rather be tased any day. It would seem from the story that the fan was also physically resisting the officers and that they took appropriate action which is the least amount of force necessary to protect themselves and gain compliance.

It is absolutely “SHOCKING” what goes on at a golf course in this day and age.
