House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday urged Catholic leaders to "instruct" their parishioners to support immigration reforms, saying clerics should "play a very major role" in supporting Democratic policies.
"The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me and say, 'We want you to pass immigration reform,' and I said, 'I want you to speak about it from the pulpit. I want you to instruct your' -- whatever the communication is," said Pelosi, who is Catholic, speaking at the Nation's Catholic Community conference sponsored by Trinity Washington University and the National Catholic Reporter.
"The people, some (who) oppose immigration reform, are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the gospels," she said.
While it's not unusual for clergy to speak about politics from the pulpit, it is uncommon for a lawmaker to openly encourage them to preach a specific policy.

It looks like the Catholic Church has bigger problems on its hands than Protestants.
I would hazard a guess that this is what they get for not standing up to her over abortion at the very least.
This is just Pelosi trying to remain relevant, she knows her days in power will soon be at an end.
Where’s separation of church and state when you need it?
This is typical liberal mentality.
They think that if they invoke God, the Christians will just roll over and expose their jugular.
It’s like they think that Christians believe everything that someone tells them in the name of God and are so afraid of being seen to be opposed to God that they just fall in step and comply. *She said that this is what God wants us to do. Oh no! We can’t argue now.*
Earth to Pelosi and liberals......
Use (God) at your own risk.
Heck, she’s using GOD to advance her own agenda.
So much for the old separation of church and state.. she should know people do not listen to the church..after all she is a pro abort
If this had happened in a Protestant church, the feds would be looking into revoking its tax-exempt status.
I don’t know why the Vatican doesn’t publicly excommunicate these people. You either have beliefs and convictions or you don’t. Stop being wishy-washy about everything.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excommunication#The_Catholic_Church
According to the Catholic Church, excommunication, in the sense of a formal proceeding, is not a penalty, but rather a formal proclamation of a pre-existing condition in a more or less prominent member of the Catholic Church. When such a person commits acts that in themselves separate him from the communion of the faithful, particularly when by word, deed, or example he or she “spreads division and confusion among the Faithful”, it is necessary for the Church to clarify the situation by means of a formal announcement, which informs the laity that this is not a person to follow, and notifies the clergy that the person, by their own willful acts, has separated from the Church and is no longer to receive the sacraments, with the exception of Reconciliation if they turn from their ways. The decree may also indicate the mode of Reconciliation required for re-entry into the Church, specifying whether the local bishop may administer the process or it is reserved to the Pope. Excommunication is never a merely “vindictive penalty” (designed solely to punish), but is always used as a “medicinal penalty” intended to pressure the person into changing their behaviour or statements, repent and return to full communion.
You know, we ex-Catholics keep getting shredded by FRoman Catholics for our relating what we know what grassroots Catholics believe.
We are constantly being told that it is not accurate, that that’s not what the Catholic Church teaches, etc.
But look at a situation like this. And look at all the Catholics that vote Democratic during elections and put the likes of obama, Kennedy, Kerry, in positions of power.
All that does is go to show that we are correct about what the average grassroots Catholic believes and that the Church, by its silence and inaction, is giving tacit agreement to it.
There’s a big difference between what FRoman Catholics would like the Church to teach, how they would like the Church to function, and what they wish it would be,... and what it really is.
This shows what it is in practice. Right or not, it’s reality.
Only where a Republican speaks. The "Rev" Jackson and Sharpton seem not to have a problem inviting Clinton or Obama to speak. Yet Palin's church can be firebombed and no one says a word.
Personally, the Democrats are the ones trying to take away religious freedoms. They are for homosexual activities, abortions, etc. Why a church think they should hear them speak is beyond me. For the Catholics to invite Pelosi to speak is like the early Christians wanting to hear Nero points of views.
chutzpah, industrial strength.
Hypocracy.
This church embraces liberalism at every opportunity. Why FR RC's keep trying to sell the nonsense that it is a conservative church is beyond me. RC's were one of the key voting blocs that put 0bama in office and gave the radical left a huge majority. Outside of the lip service they give to life issues and marriage they walk hand in hand with the radical left.
Destroying America by supporting massive immigration of under educated, non english speaking people is anything but conservative.
That about sums it up....
RCC voting history is there for all to see.
But if you post an article bringing that to light you are belittled and the premise of said article is downplayed.
It is the strangest thing to see. No matter how bad their church is on something they will defend it. All the recent discussions about the Marian cult and the worship of Mary and they keep defending it. Lord help them.
The immigration issue is just one more example of why they can not be depended on as an ally.
In general I agree the RC leadership is left..the pope would like a disarmed socialist world with one religion (guess which one :)
I suspect most of the bishops and cardinals would be in agreement with the "father" in Rome..
But I think that the whole legalize the mexicans is because they are by and large catholics and they will fill the western churches ...it is self interest.
I will say that the FR catholics are generally politically conservative.. I have no idea how they feel about this push by their church
I agree, it is self serving.
I will say that the FR catholics are generally politically conservative.. I have no idea how they feel about this push by their church
I'm not so sure. They are very quick to proclaim their church is conservative. If they can't recognize how leftist it is how conservative can they be. With their offerings they support a liberal church that is undermining this country.
I agree.
RCs here give lip service to conservative principles, but when push comes to shove, they fall into lockstep behind Roman Catholic social justice theory, which is pure socialism bordering on communism, and most recently articulated by Ratzinger's "global authority" encyclical.
Truly, the RCC is an enemy to religious, political and individual liberty.
I just never knew to what extent until I started reading these threads and learning what RCs actually believe. RCs elected Obama. They are not conservative. Period.
I would encourage anyone to spend a few dollars and buy Ratzinger's roughly 60-page "global authority" encyclical which was cheered and bravo-ed by every Roman Catholic on this site.
The encyclical is pure communism. It's even more extreme than it's been portrayed. Once you read it, and once you realize NO ROMAN CATHOLIC ON THIS SITE criticized its dangerous, anti-American vision for the future, I doubt you'd believe this again.
