20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins

(This is a guest post from The Economic Collapse Blog.)
Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.
Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy. All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?

Are you prepared?

Wow. Tough break.
I gave all mine away as gifts to friends.
I forget their names now...
All I need is....directions to your place. ;o)
I have more guns than I know what to do with, but I don't have enough hands or sleep hours to use them if need be. I need trigger pullers and sentries.
For those without a large gun collection, and not much money, go out and purchase a Ruger 10/22 or Ruger 77/22, 1000 rounds of ammo, a sling, a scope, and start practicing.
Alot of "preppers" want to give me hell for recommending a .22LR, but the ammo is good for barter, cheap, easy, reliable, and dont the the round fool you, you can easily kill a man or deer with it with proper shot placement.
If its TEOTWAWKI, then you can make a suppressor for the rifle easily, since you won't have to worry about government agents anymore.
One thing I didn't like about this list is TOOLS. YOu need an extensive amount of tools and supplies to MAKE and REPAIR things. For instance, we have a horse drawn plow, tack gear for pairing draft horses, extra rakes and shovels, and even broken shovel heads and handles. Hope that helps!
Really? Just 20? Why not 50? 100? Do you really think that you’ll survive because of “things”? You’ll survive [or not] for other reasons.
Where’s “move to another country”>
Donated mine to ACORN.
Live near Little Rock with a very high dark-skinned "Amish" population if you get my drift. Hence owning a couple of belt-feds (LEGAL ATF form 3&4'd!) If SHTF, gonna have to bug out via rail old rail road head and fire lane and book 120 miles up to Harrison, AR in the Ozarks.
Society has about 48-72 hours before the vampires come out and chaos reigns. Awareness and Prepardness will cause most of the good guys to survive.....after 72 hrs though....all bets off, survival of the fittest if you haven't relocated.
Bears repeating.
The writers left out knowledge and skills before you need them.
You probably would enjoy the ending of “A Boy and His Dog” better. Post-apocalypse world, boy meets girl, boy saves girl, boy feeds girl to dog at the end. Starring a young Don Johnson.
The authors also left out books, pamplets, technical manuals, etc. One of the first things the wife and I will grab is our "skills" bookshelf with loads of knowledge. Note: don't get smart and think your CDs and laptops will have all the info if the lights go out. Have it printed out on paper. Also, carry leisure books and board games....if you're not working, standing guard, or cooking/cleaning, youre going to need some social time and fun until the lights come back on.
Ah! Now there’s a “thing” to have!!!
First time my wife fired a handgun, safest place on the range was standing in front of her.
Can’t include guns and ammo. That would be far too realistic! And terribly NON-PC!!!
He died.
Gee, I wonder what he ever did with all those guns...?
That's an axe, but the rest of your statement is correct. They did that purely for political reasons, I'm sure. Mustn't show a nasty, evil gun. The fact remains, however, that folks who "don't like guns" better get comfortable with guns quickly, because pansy whining and irrational fear of tools will get them victimized and, quite likely, killed when the collapse happens.
At the very least, Business Insider has come to grips with reality and, perhaps, so will their readers. Page 20 of the article says it and places emphasis where it belongs.
You don't want to end up like the folks in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. You don't want to have to rely on the government to take care of you if something really bad happens.
Right now the U.S. strategic grain reserve contains only enough wheat to make half a loaf of bread for each of the approximately 300 million people in the United States.
How long do you think that is going to last?
Now is the time to get ready.
Now is the time to prepare.
The United States economy is going to collapse and incredibly hard times are coming.
Will you be able to survive when it happens?
When Clinton got elected in ‘92 I knew then it wasn’t long before this country would collapse and I began at that time to prepare.
I have vegetable seeds and herb gardens, roosters and hens, dairy goats and two small stocked ponds, all on sixteen acres.
I have gold and silver and plenty of lead!!
it’s good to be a well-armed homesteader. :) I pity the city.
The speed with which law enforcement public trust can disintegrate is frightening. See Athens where it is the public emplyees rioting and throwing fire bombs at uniformed peacekeepers, likely military. So it means making sure that your local defenders - sheriff's office, police and fire - stay in place even if the national picture is bleak. It also means that public employee unions like the SEIU are constantly monitored so that local law enforcers remain obligated to the community, not the union thugs.
Basic skills like carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electric wiring will be useful in bartering in Obama’s new economy.
“Boy and his Girl” is a good read - as usual, much better than any film portrayal. That’s the story that crossed my mind, too!
