Whitman weighs in on immigration
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 5/6/2010 | John Marelius

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman said in San Diego on Thursday she opposes the Arizona anti-illegal immigration legislation and would veto such a bill if it were sent to her desk as governor.

“I understand the frustrations that Arizonans have with the abject failure of the federal government to secure the border of the United States,” she said. “However, if such a law came to me as governor of California, I would oppose it. And the reason is I think I have a better plan to solve this most urgent problem.”

Whitman’s opponent for the Republican nomination, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, supports the Arizona law that requires law enforcement officers to question people they suspect of being in the country illegally.

He initially opposed the law, but said in a Sunday debate in San Jose that last-minute revisions seeking to avoid racial profiling “have taken care of, from my point of view, of any concerns.”

Whitman, the former eBay CEO, fielded questions about a wide range of issues after speaking to about 75 people in the University City backyard of a retired couple, Jackie and Wayne Young.

When asked about the Arizona law, she said a better approach would be to crack down on employers who knowingly hire people who are not in the country legally and deploy the California National Guard to help patrol the border.

But Whitman said such measures would be of limited effectiveness if the federal government doesn’t provide more equipment and manpower.

“It isn’t going to help if the federal government doesn’t step up,” Whitman said

For all of the effort that she’s put into her campaign, you’d think that someone might have told her that she has to win the REPUBLICAN Primary first, and she just lost it.

Another Republican that understands but would not do anything about the problem...great!

We need her just like we need all the other idiots that pretend to do something about the problem...with words.

STOP illegal immigration and then come back to be with changes in the laws.

Hi. I’m Meg Whitman and I’m glad to be here today.

If you happen to notice dollar bills of all denominations falling out of the sky behind me, please accept that we’ll have this corrected in short order.

The people who set up this stage thought this was going to be another campaign commercial where money is supposed to fall out of the sky for me.

I don’t really think this election is for sale, so please get that out of your mind.

(besides, I already bought it...)

The federal government didn't, which is why Arizona had to take matters into their own hands. If she can't understand that simple concept how is she supposed to run the state of California?

Great point. If she’s unaware she needs our support now she’ll find out come November.

This SB is total political History.

We should be thankful she's shown her colors (blue). We wouldn't want to be surprised with that later.

Arizona already did that. The problem is that only Sheriff Arpaio is trying to enforce the law.

She is trying to have it both ways. She’s against the Arizona law (covering her left flank) but she’ll stop illegal immigration (covering her right flank) by going after employers (covering her left flank again).

The better answer would be to boldly explain that all foreign nationals are required to carry identification in any and every country in the world and the US is no different. I would respect someone who was just a little bit fearless. I don’t respect someone who thinks she has to hide who she is, hoping that people will elect her by mistake.

She is just one more of a long line of Repubs trying to win office through the side door. The whole purpose of elections is the process of argument and persuasion. Nobody is persuaded if you hide your argument between the lines, pretending to agree with absolutely everybody.

Yea, I remember when Richard Riordan was running for governor (as a moderate). He actually was a really cool guy...in one case, his restaurant (the Pantry, one of the best in LA) got shut down by the health department while he was the LA mayor. He ordered his restaurant to STAY SHUTDOWN until they were in compliance - total class - and so rare these days.

Yet, while running for the nomination, he said that he would “modernize” the Republican Party, or something like that. Really smart - needless to say, he had his head handed to him in the Primary.

This twit doesn't understand that the vast majority of illegal aliens in CA are drug runners, gang-bangers, and overall leeches of the taxpayer social programs.

Who is she going to "crack down" on? There are virtually no major employers left in CA, and the ones that do exist are shady and pay the illegals under the table. As far as the Guard patrolling the border....she just admitted that she won't act until the feds act, so she's basically passing the buck back to Washington.

CA deserves Jerry Brown so he can deliver the railroad spike into the heart of this once-great state.
