The Republican Party is re-opening its big umbrella - or more accurately, not closing its primary after all.
At a meeting over the weekend, the state executive committee decided to forgo a legal challenge to a law that allows independents to choose which primary they want to vote in.
While some members argue that Republicans should be choosing the party's nominee, state GOP spokesman Matt Roberts said the group decided to hold off until at least until next year, given the slow wheels of justice and the looming August primary.
Somewhere, John "Don't Call Me Maverick" McCain is probably a happy senator. Not so much challenger J.D. Hayworth, whose strongest appeal may be to the more conservative Republicans who are faithful primary voters.

In defense of those primary voters (at least the Republican ones), our illustrious party has been favorable to allowing open primaries. We’re not picking our own candidates. Independents and even sometimes Democrats are helping us choose. I mean, how dim does a party have to be to not realize that is a problem?
"What a revoltin' development this is!"
:)
If McDemocrat wins the primary the GOP is DEAD as a party. Time for a new 3rd party.
What am I missing here? NOTHING HAS CHANGED. This is how it’s been in the recent past. They talked of changing it, but for whatever reason they are not. I don’t think it’s going to really make that big of a difference. Honestly? If anything, it’ll help JD.
I have to disclose that I live in AZ and I am very active in Republican politics and I support JD. Many conservatives here in Mohave changed their party affiliation to Independent, so that’s why I don’t think this is really going to change a thing.
Sad news, but it’s good to be informed. Thank you and FRegards ...
Can you mobilize the TP and almost literally assault the state GOP offices in protest of the “open” primary? Just say “no” to the open primary which gives McCain the win over JD-that’s the only way to look at it. There has to be activism to defeat McCain.
The open primary is the way it is now. You want to change the primary to help JD...right?
You better believe it. The open primary almost assures McCain of victory because of the crossover vote-the same thing that happened in the presidential primaries of ‘08(and other primaries). So what I’m saying is develop if possible a “grassroots” challenge to the state GOP and make them close the primaries to other than ‘pubbies” only(read Conservatives). That means, IMHO, it’s time for the Tea Partly to spring into action, the Tea Party is the only movement(that I know of) that could influence the state GOP. Tell me if I’m wrong. Ultimately, that gives JD a chance.
How do you see this helping JD?
