A British Army sharp shooter has told how he killed five Taliban soldiers in 28 seconds - in a desperate bid to protect a British patrol that the insurgents were preparing to ambush.
The enemy targets were more than a mile away when the sniper, a corporal serving with 4 Rifles, got the all clear to take them out.
The corporal - who has 37 confirmed kills in just four months in the war zone - said that he and his spotter were set up in an old fort in Haji Alem, in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province.
They spotted the Taliban soldiers getting ready to attack a British foot patrol.
The sniper, who has not been named for security reasons, was using the L115A3 long-range rifle, which has an effective range of 1,100 metres.

Bravo Zulu soldier!
I imagine he probably got off two rounds before the report of the first reached the intended targets.
Five shots magazine on that rifle... Five Talibunnies down, a mile out... Doubt he had time to reload in those 28 seconds...
Impressive!
“Enemy At The Gates”. Great WWII Sniper Movie . He was a Russian sniper pitted against a German sniper . Mosin Nagant vs Mauser . See it , you’ll like it .
Looks like it has a suppressor...so all they would hear is the buzzing hornet...
IR is a semi auto with five round box may and the article said it took nine shots?for the first kill is that what I read?
Nine rounds to take out the first one......
Can’t use sub-sonic ammo at that range, so it still “cracks” a sonic boom.
No, I think meant to say Vassili Zaitsev incarnate. Jude Law is just the actor who portrayed Zaitsev.
Yes, they almost certainly did. According to the article, taking down the first guy took 9 rounds. Understandable since the effective range of the weapon is listed at about 1100 meters, and this engagement was happening at about 1600 meters. So it took a few rounds to get the proper correction.
Apparently the enemy unit was closing on the friendlies, because subsequent engagements were at shorter ranges. Probably not much shorter - how far can you run in 28 seconds, really? Noteworthy is that the enemy unit apparently continued with their attempt to engage the patrol even after they started taking fire. (rather than taking cover) They say the battlefield weeds out the dumb ones quickly, guess this is proof.
Unbelievable. Bolt Action, 338 Lupua with a 3x12 scope. Even at 12 power the targets would be pretty small at a mile. Factor in wind, gravity, temperature, rotation of the earth, etc. and that’s incredible shooting.
The movie the hurt locker depicted sniper fire pretty accurately.
.wind, heat,humidity and tim
e of day all factor in how the sound carries. ...
Raise this man to sergeant!
Wow...The Brits are producing some of the finest snipers in the world. This is the second shooting, the first, was reported over the weekend and he took out 2 at 1.5 miles. Using the same rifle...! I’d love to see one of those rifles..(love to own one)
Ya gotta love professionals.
Amazing what was done in the event your are referencing.

-bullets took almost three seconds to reach their targets
-distance to his two targets was 8,120ft, or 1.54 miles
A good chart of the weapon and its capabilities at this article:

The question I have is did he get the 2nd shot off before the 1st shot hit the target.
Happy hunting! Hey old chap I bagged 37 Taliban. Pip pip cherry oh!
Didn’t a Brit sniper just set a world record of a 1 1/2 mile hit?
