ABC News Jake Tapper took heat from some liberal bloggers when he contrasted President Obamas call for civility in politics with Obamas use of the term tea-bagger in a November interview for Jonathan Alters new book. At issue was Tappers failure to point out that the term was originally coined by the Tea Party movement, which he addressed in an update.
WaPos Dave Weigel, meanwhile, traces the movements attempt to frame the term as a slur. Its time to correct the record once and for all.
Let me first address the criticism of Tappers story. The fact that the Tea Party movement coined the term has little relevance to Jakes point. In comments to Mediaite yesterday, Dave Weigel summed up the civil way to deal with this:
I like to follow a policy of calling people what they want to be called or at least dont object to being called. This is why you dont see me call people teabaggers.

Its a gay thing. Its their little gay inside joke.
I don’t expect civility from juveniles, but I also don’t take anything they say seriously.
______
He may want to ask Larry about tea bags.
Aww is poor little barry so frustrated with his complete incompetence in office he has to resort to childish name calling?? Mr. President you are a PETTY LITTLE “Man-Child”..
at least with Nixon given his history and the way the media and the elites felt about him and his background and all, you could understadn where his paranoia and thin skin came from. Obama is on top of the world. The media and the glitterati all love him and worship at his feet. What does he have to be resentful or upset about?
Many black people call each other the "N" word.
Does that make it OK for anybody else to call them that?
Was Barry the teabagger or the teabagee?
We should ask his old boyfreind Larry about that one.
Friend.
Sheesh, i always screw that word up.
When asked to comment on the “teabagger” namecalling, Tea Party spokesmen should be instructed to simply say “close enough!” with a big smile, and move on.
If pressed by an obnoxious reporter, they should innocently ask the reporter “what do you mean by ‘teabagger’?” The media outlet will cut the question (and the answer, if one is given) from the video, and that’s that.
Obama's steady stream of lies provides smart Journalists with a great opportunity to come into "their own"!
Prominence is a wonderful thing...eh, Barky?
.
Great. Now how do I get that mental image out of my mind?
Tea bagger is very GAY term that ypu can find on the NET.
Where is the ACLU when Obummer makes a comment.

I’ve watched the whole tea party evolve, from a rant by a financial reporter on cable, to tax day protests, to the political and cultural force that it is today, in two short years.
Never once during that time, did I hear the term “teabagger” until several nobodies and Gloria Vanderbilt’s daughter started giggling about teabagging and using the term on MSNBC. There was immediate recognition as to just why these people were using the term, they’re all sexual deviants of one sort or another.
To now try and claim that it’s a self-referential term coined by tea partiers themselves, is really peculiar.
These people do realize they’re being observed and they no longer can just airbrush history out for a do-over, don’t they? Apparently not.
Or, ask the reporter, would it be insulting to you if called a "Communist dirtbag"?
Lie.
He's got in-house expertise now. Why dredge up the past?
how many repoters would object to the term b*tp*r*te?
