I’ve got 2 used Mossberg 500s; One cost me $50 and the other cost me $90. Brand new they run upwards of $300+ so they’re not very expensive. Where you store it is personal preference. Mine are in the bedroom closet.
I assume anything in a 45cal size is going to be very loud, yes?
Also...why do you not recommend it for "concealed carry"?
How often do you practice? Is the ammunition expensive?
The homeowner made the burlglar gurgle...
Brand new Maverick88 in 20 gage pump is under $200. Cut the barrel off at 18 1/2 inches, add a pistol grip stock, recoil pad, and twenty round bandolier, still under three hundred. Will cycle slugs and buckshot with no problemo.
If you can handle an auto loader, the Taurus OSS DS in .45 ACP holds twelve in the mags and one up the pipe and takes an under frame laser. Very good home defense weapon if you can't reach a shotgun.
Rossi has a youth model .410 shotgun single shot with an extra .22LR barrel for plinking. I mounted a short picatinny rail under the foregrip to which a vertical foregrip is attached. Then I used industrial strength velcro (you fidn it in LOWE'S or Home Depot) to attach the felt side to the butt stock and the hook side to a strip of cartridge holder cut from an elastic butt sock for rifles. The strip of eight or nine rounds of slug or #2 shot can be kept separate from the weapon (which should be stored put together in .410 22 inch barrel mode with vertical foregrip attached) but brought to battery swiftly, with reloading easy from the strip of shells. I also attached a laser to the barrel, so the lady (she's small) can shoot reliably from the hip. You hold the shot gun with both hands, but hold it with the vertical foregrip while reloading.
And you can buy the youth model at Wal Mart fro around $150, then add the rail, butt stock cartridge holder, and vertical foregrip for around fifty bucks. Practie shooting and reloading using regular bird shot .410. The little 22LR barrel is 16 inches and the shotgun barrel is 22 1/4 inches. Nice rig for home defense where children are in the home. One caution: do not try to shoot Taurus Judge .45 long colt rounds through the shotgun, even though you can load the Taurus Judge .410 #4 shot rounds in it. BUT, the .41o slugs are just about the same effect and they can be shot through the full choked shotgun barrel.
If there are no children to worry about, the butt sock for hunting rifles works well to store .410 shells&slug rounds on the Rossi youth model shotgun.
Why are you so focused on a “loud report”?
Yeah, .357 mag is ideal. Load it with a slow powder such as H110 and the resulting report and fireball are quite impressive.
Nothing like some permanent hearing damage when you are forced to defend youself.
Because
1. If and when I miss the first shot, I want the perp peeeing in his/her drawers,
2. The very loud shot may bring assistance from neighbors,
3. If I do miss the first shot, I'd rather the perp just left...speedily to be sure!
I believe it was the shotgun owners who say that the sound of chambering a round in a shotgun is a great deterent to the would be thief/murderer.
If you aren't going to CCW then get a double action revolver with a 4" barrel even a .38 Special with +P rounds will be effective enough.
J&G Sales has lots of S&W police trade ins for less than $300.
Please, I beg of you....no acronyms.
What the heck is "CCW"?
Concealed carry.
Concealed carry = CC
So...what is the "W" for?
How is a homeowner lawfully defending himself a vigilante?
Concealed Carry of a Weapon.
Thank you.
