The failure of the Camp David summit in 2000 and the onset of the Second Intifada have in stages swung the pendulum of Israeli politics to the right to the current government that includes Avigdor Lieberman - one of the most anti-democratic ministers Israel has ever had, who is moving Israel ever closer to the brink of total international isolation - and the Shas Party whose main impact is to push construction in East Jerusalem and the settlements.

Dennis Prager, the author of the article that began that thread, referred to Soros as Jewish. Prager was discussing how "liberal" Jews - including Soros - have a tendency to trivialize the Holocaust and Nazism by invoking them in comparison to other, much less heinous, current regimes and events.
As to the posted article in this thread, I've never before heard of Carlo Strenger, and his promotion of J Street and leftist Jewish intellectuals in Europe deserves a couple of barfies.
There should be a “BARF” warning for anything from Haartz.

Soros was born into a Jewish family. There’s no evidence I’m aware of that he ever practiced the faith.
He’s Jewish. Once Jewish, always Jewish. Nothing a man can do will seperate him from that identity.
Of course, the worst traitors to the Jewish people have always been Jewish.
It’s a rejection and hatred of self.

As long as he hasn't identified with another religion, he's a Jew, if he had converted, he'd be an apostate Jew, heretic if you prefer. There's no question of that. And as I noted briefly on the other thread, trivializing the Holocaust isn't limited to the left. On this site we refer to Obama as Hitler, his administration as the Reich, Jews and survivors as cowardly, self hating, oven Jews, marching off to the boxcars voluntarily on a continual basis. None of which has much to do with this article.

On some levels, the Obama ideology resembles those of various tyrannic regimes down through history. Fortunately, it hasn't reached anywhere near the level of heinousness of Nazi Germany yet, but only the diligence of the American people can prevent it from swinging more in that direction.
In fact I'm not aware of that. I'm aware of disputes over conversion, which is irrelevant in Soros' case. I'm aware of apostacy had he converted, which doesn't apple, or expulsion from the Jewish community, rare and generally the local community. But I’m not aware of any question about the religious status of the child of a Jewish mother, irrelevant but father too, who hasn’t converted, as a Jew. Some Congregations might not welcome him, but that’s a different thing. We can’t just make these things up cause we don’t like the guy.

Right, he’s not Hitler, America not only hasn't reached anywhere near the level of heinousness of Nazi Germany yet, yet isn’t even in the equation. America isn’t going to round up Jews and kill them. These comparisons make conservatives look like nuts. More appropriate to the other thread, which I largely passed on, but you can’t credibly attack the left for making Nazi comparisons unless you’re willing to attack the right when they do it. It goes to credibility.
As for the more general issue as to "Who is a Jew?", you have to agree that there are some cases where this is a thorny problem. Israel has had to define Jewishness for the purpose of immigration policy, and that legal definition of "Jew" in Israel has caused some controversy. Most notoriously, there have been young Russian immigrants to Israel admitted as "Jews" who have no immediate Jewish family background and who have caused a lot of trouble in Israel by perpetrating antisemitic incidents.
