The US revealed the size of its nuclear arsenal last night in an unprecedented attempt to galvanise efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, announced the declassification of one of the Pentagon’s most closely guarded secrets at the opening day of a critical international meeting on global disarmament.
The Pentagon’s figures show that the US stockpile consists of 5,113 nuclear warheads and “several thousand” more retired warheads that await dismantling. The figures reveal an 84 per cent reduction from the historic peak of 31,225 warheads in 1967 at the height of the Cold War.
“Beginning today, the United States will make public the number of nuclear weapons in our stockpile and the number of weapons we have dismantled since 1991,” Mrs Clinton told the UN review conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

I’m sure Chia-Head in North Korea will announce that the Norks are cutting back on their nuclear arsenal as well, and Iran will immediately stop their nuclear weapons program, in order to sit around a campfire and sing Kum_Bay_YAH with President Obama and Secretary Clinton...

Hey didn’t Bush already agree to specific reductions ... and specific remaining warheads? I am not sure this is a big deal.
It takes just one to turn Iran into a huge glass skating rink.
Well, actually I would imagine that the only ones who didn’t know that were the common ordinary citizens... all the governments who have their intelligence agencies working on those kinds of things, probably already have the same numbers listed a long time ago ... :-)

Actually the stated reason is plausible. It's not that it was any great secret. Close estimates were on the interweb - Wikipedia, Global Security, Federation of Atomic Scientists, and nuclearweaponarchive U.S. Nuclear Weapon Enduring Stockpile Last changed 31 August 2007
At the beginning of 2007 the U.S. nuclear arsenal was composed of eight types of nuclear warheads (in thirteen variant mods) that are operationally deployed, with an estiamted count of 5,736 active stockpile warheads.The information was there for anyone who wanted it as background.
This announcment only makes it available to people too stupid to use Google. And what do you think people believing "galvanise efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons" is feasible are?

“We have met the enemy and it is us”.
It’s naive to see this as naive.
So, did the Pentagon actually de-classify this information?
Who in The Pentagon? What was the nature of the debate therein?
The number of weapons is secondary in importance to the number of delivery systems. A nuke in a bunker is no good if it is your own bunker. A US nuke in a bunker in Iran is good.
