Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will not run for Arizona governor this year.
In a news release issued Monday afternoon, the Sheriff said his decision was based on wanting to continue to serve as the countys top law enforcement officer.
I am humbled by the encouragement and outpouring of support for me to run for Governor," Arpaio said in the release.
"However, at the same time, so many have supported my campaign for re-election that I do not want to betray them by running for another office."
Several sources told ABC15 last week that Arpaio had all the necessary paperwork filled out and was ready to file as a candidate.
Those same sources said Arpaio was likely to run for the office.
Even without a campaign for governor, Arpaio still has a reported $2 million in his political war chest.
Declared candidates for this fall's gubernatorial election include current Governor Jan Brewer, State Treasurer Dean Martin, businessman Buzz Mills and Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard.
Maybe Sarah will make him head of the FBI.
he probably does not see the need to run now that Gov. Brewer has signed the immigration bill.
Palin/Arpaio 2012!!!
Stand tall, Sheriff Joe, you’re doing a good job, don’t stop.
Now THAT would make heads explode! I like it.
That’s as likely as McCain/Arpaio
The guy would be about 80 in 2012. Don’t think he would help the ticket at that age.
Exactly. Not that he’s too old, but yes. His age would be a factor.
My Mom lives in his county and did not want him to run. She was afraid they wouldn’t get as good a Sheriff in replacement.
Your Mom has a point there.
I’d rather see Sarah appoint him to head ICE.
“Maybe Sarah will make him head of the FBI.”
You know something, he is exactly right for that job. What an interesting thought.
Please, No! Arpaio yes, but not Palin, ever!
You will now be summarily attacked and called a hater, a troll, a Romney supporter, a DUmmie...to name a few.
Good. I admire him very much, but hated to see him run against Jan Brewer after she acted so bravely on immigration.
And I don’t doubt he’s in prime shape, but 80 is a bit old to learn new tricks. He really sets a good example in law enforcement.

Rather to be thought to be an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
