ME may become nuke-free zone
Jerusalem Post ^ | 1 May, 2010 | JPost.com staff

Washington and Cairo are negotiating an agreement which would see the Middle East become a nuclear-free zone, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

According to the report, which comes two days ahead of a UN-hosted conference to prevent nuclear proliferation, the agreement is aimed at making the treatment of nuclear weapons in the Middle East more balanced.

The US has been criticized in the past for expressing concern over the suspected nuclear ambitions of countries such as Syria and Iran with nary a mention of Israel's reported nuclear arsenal.

The Wall Street Journal quoted senior Obama administration officials as saying that the US officials would meet with their Egyptian counterparts in New York in efforts to promote the idea of a nuke-free Middle East which would encompass Arab countries as well as Israel, Iran and Turkey.

"We've made a proposal to them that goes beyond what the US has been willing to do before," one official reportedly said. Others added that progress would have to be made on the Israeli-Palestinian track before such an agreement could be made.

"We are concerned that the conditions are not right unless all members of the region participate, which would be unlikely unless there is a comprehensive peace plan which is accepted," the Wall Street Journal quoted Ellen Tauscher, US undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, as saying.

Elections do have consequences. When a country elects a socialist, racist foreigner with minimal experience of running anything things will not turn out so well. When a super-power does the same thing the world is looking at a catstrophe.

Does this incompetent little snot that real US citizens unfortunately have to call their President not realise that this is bringing the ME as close to a nuclear war as it has been since the Yom Kippur war in 1973?

Please, remove my comment above. As a foreigner and as a guest at a US website I have no right to write what I did. I do respect the office of POTUS - I just wish the US voters had done the same in November 2008.

All I can say to the Israelis is that they would have to be complete suckers to fall for this. Obama must think he’s dealing with children, trying to get a few kids to do something and then pressuring the others to fall in line. Monkey see monkey do won’t work here, even if it sometimes works in community organizing.

What a followup to peace between Israel and the Palestinians....

Or didn't that work back in 1950?

This may well be what they planned to ambush Bibi with in DC. I expect he got plenty of forewarning.

And all the pressure will focus on Israel, with little attention paid to Syria or Iran, despite their being mentioned. The upshot will be huge international investigations on making sure Israel complies, despite their never having admitted to possessing any nukes at all. Eventually, the UN may even send in nuclear inspectors to rout out hidden nukes, and any stonewalling will be seen as intransigence. Then, when Israel’s nukes have been more or less ferreted out (or sent back to their countries of origin under cover of night) watch for a massive conventional war to break out. The only thing keeping the peace in the ME right now is the threat that Israel might retaliate with nukes to any incursion. Without those weapons, Israel is largely toothless. Their military, however well trained, is tiny compared to some of the other forces in the region, and is largely trained for short conflicts and anti-insurgent operations, not large-scale open conflict. This can be most readily seen in the strategy behind the Merkava tank, which is a formidable weapons system, but is geared towards defensive combat and as a point of central control for infantry operations (each can carry a small infantry squad inside the hull). AFAIK, it lacks the fuel range to manage open-country combat, even against the older soviet-era systems that Syria and Iran would field. And you can bet the US won’t be disposed to come to their aid, with the current executive running the show. Of course, eventually there will be peace again, of a sort, but it will come at the cost of abandoning Israel, and ending up with an entirely muslim-controlled ME.

ME may become nuke-free zone

And my cat may start laying solid gold eggs.

Both things are equally as likely.

No he doesn't, because he is an incompetent little snot surrounding himself with a bunch of anti-American way elitists.

So do I, the occupant is another story. There have been a number I have held in total contempt.

Israel should immediately agree and give up their nukes.

Hear me out.

They should agree and give up SOME of their nukes. Lie and say “yup, that’s all of them.” But keep most of them.

Then, when “all the armies of the world” attack them, Isreal should use the remaining nukes to glass every country involved. Every one.

Prophecy fulfilled?

Don’t worry, they weren’t born yesterday...(3000+years ago, as a matter of fact.) The Dipsh*t in chief was born 47 years ago—he worships his father, the adversary, and doesn’t know that the old snake is going to lose...hope he has some asbestos underwear.
