Immigrant Activists, Including Congressman, Arrested Outside White House ( U.S. Rep Luis Gutierrez)

Immigrant advocates are being arrested in front of the White House fence, after sitting down and defying orders from police.

About three dozen protesters and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois joined in the civil disobedience Saturday. They held a sign saying, "Obama, Stop deporting our Families." Some wore T-shirts that read "Arrest us, Not our Families."

Protesters are usually required to stay in motion when demonstrating in front of the White House.

Hundreds of protesters turned out for the rally at Lafayette Park, urging President Obama to fulfill his campaign promises to achieve immigration reform.

Obama was to return to the White House around 2:40 p.m. after speaking at the University of Michigan. Two Marine helicopters flew overhead, but it wasn't clear if Obama was on board.

Obama had once promised to tackle immigration reform in his first 100 days, but has pushed back that timetable several times. He said this week that Congress may lack the "appetite" to take on immigration after going through a tough legislative year. However, the president and Congress could address related issues, like boosting personnel and resources for border security, in spending bills this year.

Activists said outrage over Arizona's controversial immigration law "awakened a sleeping giant" Saturday as rallies demanding federal immigration reform kicked off in cities across the country.

In New York, Labor organizer John Delgado said anger over the law -- which requires local law enforcement to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they're in the country illegally -- drew more than 5,000 people to a rally at Manhattan's Foley Square.

"That's the fuel that motivated them to come here, because of the sadness of the Arizona law," said Delgado, who is business manager for Local 79 of the Construction and General Building Laborers Union.

Is he also going to protest against the federal illegal immigration law? ...you know, the one the AZ law mirrors?

Nah, didn't think so.

Too bad it isn't Sheriff Arpaio hodling this thug. I'd love to see a photo of this fruit wearing pink underwear to show up during his next campaign on a opponent's ad.

Why yes. Yes, he is... LOL Obama will probably not be going to Arizona any time in the future. Although he’ll pretend it’s a “Boycott”. And, if he does go, Gov. Brewer should ask him! LOL

I think it's clear that Chicago politics has now officially surpassed Massachusetts politics in terms of sliminess and amorality.

Not to mention being used as slaves in unethical businesses. Besides... It’s not like all illegal aliens and illegal immigrants are from South of the US, either! They come from all over. It’s ridiculous that only certain people are protesting this. It will apply to EVERYONE regardless of nationality, or ethnicity. There are strict rules in application of this law as well, and anyone who tells you they will be racially profiling is not being honest according to everything about Arizona’s law.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez is scheduled to face off with J.D. Hayworth on Sunday, tomorrow, May 2, CBS, Face the Nation.

I suppose he’ll be out long before then.

Obama will probably personally pay his bail.

Will be interesting to see who does pay his bail indeed?!

Isn’t that public information?

Yeah, raises awareness of why we don’t want
anyone here that does NOT obey the law. They’re lawless and this is not helping their cause.

What is it about the law that a Congressman
doesn’t know.

Because he has one of the most gerrymandered districts in the country. I’m saddled with him. He cannot be turfed out because they took all the Hispanic neighborhoods and snaked them together. Us Anglos are hopelessly outnumbered and will be forever and a day.

I think the gerrymandered “safe” districts are in some ways the single biggest problem we face. They produce the Pelosis etc. who can afford to ram stuff we don’t want down our throats because they represent safe districts. It destroys every vestige of a representative republic.

But, since both parties benefit from gerrymandered districts, what are the odds of Comprehensive Gerrymander Reform? Where’s Lil Lindsey when we need him?
