All new cars would have to be equipped with "black boxes" that record performance data and federal safety regulators would be granted the authority to order immediate recalls under newly proposed auto-safety legislation being considered by Congress.
The draft of a bill was released Thursday by one of the House committees investigating Toyota's massive recalls for unintended acceleration in its vehicles.

The insane power grab must stop.
Ping.
I hate politicians. They are the absolute worst species of vermin on God’s green earth. There is absolutely nothing so screwed up that politicans can’ take it and make it an order of magnitude MORE screwed up.
But, since I’m an optimist I always look on the bright side. Think of how this will boost the used car market!

Big Brother, in the guise of safety.
When will theys top trying to make everything foll proof? let some things fail - so what. We need less government in our menus, hostipals, businesses, travel etc. etc. Get the government out of 1000 things this year and next year and next year and the next. Think of life with 5000 fewer programs, 200,000 fewer officials - who want ot help.
Correct.
It is TIME to DownSize DC!
Remove entire departments (Education, EPA, etc)
Force Congress & Senate to telecommute most of the year. Constitution states they will meet at least 1 time per year, but does not state duration. Can you imagine how that would change the center-of-gravity of the government?
IT IS TIME!
Combine this with the ATM monitoring that Rush mentioned today, and all the other Big Brother nonsense, and you have complete control of the populous. They really are moving steadily towards an “End Times” system.
This is a prelude to a national tax on miles driven.
Good time to never buy new again.
I’ve got news for you. Most new cars have those “black boxes “ now.
Yes, OnStar.
While they’re tracking that data they’re also tracking what your doing while your driving.
>While theyre tracking that data theyre also tracking what your doing while your driving.
Another benefit of “Cash for Clunkers” when you take a good cynical look at government.
( And yes- the Surveillance State, Nanny State, Naggy State society we seem to be permitting creeps me out... )
Actully I wasnt speaking of On Star.
The computer that makes your car run, the one that works the fuel injection and electrical units that fire the spark plug, actually are computers that are filled with diagnostic and other performances, such as when you are in an accident it records the RPM of the Engine, when you touched the brake and tells if you had your seat belt fastened.
Remember you can do all of this tracking, -but G*d forbid you ask an illegal for his papers...
We are a very long way past 1984, and I am as upset as you are about where we are going.
Remember, November is Coming!
Yes, I knew about that system. It was done to help factories determine where the failures are. Have no problem with that. But we are becoming a surveilance society.
The “red light” camera’s that are everywhere, even in very small towns, are not about traffic violations, but about monitoring traffic flow. Reading license plate numbers and tracking. Same with OnStar and GPS in cell phones. We wear a “bug” every day.
