Perry criticizes Ariz. law, won't adopt for Texas By Eric Zimmermann - 04/30/10 12:45 PM ET
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is not a fan of the new Arizona immigration law and said he would not consider adopting it for Texas.
In a statement released by his office, Perry said the Arizona provision would distract law enforcement officers from their basic priorities.
"[S]ome aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe," Perry said.
"Our focus must continue to be on the criminal elements involved with conducting criminal acts against Texans and their property. I will continue to work with the legislative leadership to develop strategies that are appropriate for Texas.:
While Perry said he "fully recognize[s] and support a states right and obligation to protect its citizens" the Arizona law "would not be the right direction for Texas."
He’s always been soft on the border issue. RINO at heart.
Now that he’s got the primary, he can go back to being a RINO and quit talking about secession too.
A RINO except when campaigning. Texas Republicans were given an IQ test in the primary. Unfortunately, they failed.
Shirley is by far not the worst I’ve been called... /g
I had to move from Texas in the early 1990s so I’m admittedly out of touch with the current crop of politicians. My memory of White’s adroitness stems from the time of Hurricane Rita and how he shut down the media trying to get him to slam the armed Texans who were patrolling the streets for looters. He affirmed that the citizens were doing the right thing and actually helping law enforcement. His instincts were very good on that.
My take on how this is a misstep by Perry is that Repubs should know that they can’t out-pander the Dems. White’s position on this issue is expected, but in attempting to similarly pander to the “Hispanics” and liberals Perry will not only fail to win their votes in the upcoming election, he will alienate the rest of the Texas voters who support it.
If he later tries to tack back in the other direction he’ll be open to charges of flip flopping, etc. In other words, he’s unnecessarily boxed himself in on this when he could have simply made a reasonable statement that we needed to observe and evaluate how the Arizona law performed before making a premature judgment.
I always thought that arresting illegals WAS a part of law enforcement. Guess not ,at least it isnt in Texas.
Gov Perry:
Please READ the Arizona legislation.
You are discounting something I do not believe you have read.
Your state will become another chokepoint for illegals.
Your constituents will not be happy with you.
Perry also supports the Trans-Texas Corridor project to help undermine US sovereignty by erasing the US Mexico border. If Texans vote for Perry they are voting someone who will work to directly undermine US sovereignty, but heyyy, at least it’s not Bill White the Democrat. In this case, the Democrat and the Republican will both be awful. Texans have to think outside of the box and come up with a solution to this quickly or they are just going to have to roll over and accept accept a dead end future. I expect more out of Texans than rolling over and taking it. Remember the Alamo?
Does Perry lack the basketballls?
If the Texas Legislature passes it and the people want it, he’ll sign it.””
Texas Legislature only meets every 2 years.
Don’t know when their next session is.
You mean Bill White? Former mayor of a sanctuary city and Clinton appointee? The only thing White’s going to do is lose big.
Oh, yeah, he moved right to defeat Kaye, now he’s moving left. No way to go.
And the only candidate that be beat Obama in 2012 will be one with a TON of executive experience. Americans will not be in the mood for another novice if they choose to replace Obama.
His support of the TTC and this aside... He was our strongest potential candidate in 2012, and if paired with Palin would of been unstoppable.
Perry seems to be a ‘shoot from the hip’ type guy. Not much thought to what comes out of his mouth.
The fact that the state legislature is not in session until 2011. They only meet for six months every other year.
They meet in January.
January 2011.
TEXANs can already use LETHAL FORCE to protect their homes, land, family...

Oh, I’m not rolling over on this by any means, I will fight him every step of the way on the TTC and toll roads as I have in the past. That is the only viable option we have.
Why the heck can one man be in office for so long? No term limits is nuts.
We’ll just have to pray someone else comes along, because Perry is just as much a con man as Obama.
