A plan by Senate Democratic leaders to reform the nations immigrations laws ran into strong opposition from civil liberties defenders before lawmakers even unveiled it Thursday.
Democratic leaders have proposed requiring every worker in the nation to carry a national identification card with biometric information, such as a fingerprint, within the next six years, according to a draft of the measure.

Thank you, Patrick McGoohan ;-)
This won’t fly.
I’m totally against a national ID card.
That being said it would be the only way to make the Arizona law effective. I’m an NYPDer. Do you really think everyone walks around with proper ID? Do you realize that there are a large number of adults that cannot tell you their social security #. In many cases the only way to really tell who someone is is to arrest and fingerprint them and wait for their rap sheet to come back. If they don’t have a rap sheet you may never really know. This is especially true with aliens. People think you punch a name and date of birth into a computer and bingo. That’s true for almost everyone on this forum but not for many of your average lowlifes.

MY husband was stopped recently for coming to rolling stop at a stop sign rather than a full stop. My husband gave him his license and car registration. In about 2 minutes the policeman returned to the car and said that he saw he was a concealed carry permit holder.
I was amazed that he could access that information so quickly.
He gave my husband and warning and let him go without a ticket.
You make a good point about walking around with ID. I am often without identification when my husband is driving.
Were you aware that in a disaster, such as a train or plane accident, the bodies of women take the longest to identify. Why? Because... Women carry their ID in their purses and in a violent disaster such as a train or plane wreck, the purses are thrown all over the place and are not found with the body.
Yes and your husband is a perfect example of the kind of person I’m not talking about. He’s a “normal person”.There are millions of people out there that are little more then shadows.
Creating a biometric national ID will not only be astronomically expensive, it will usher government into the very center of our lives. Every worker in America will need a government permission slip in order to work. And all of this will come with a new federal bureaucracy one that combines the worst elements of the DMV and the TSA,
What conservatives better wake up to is that E-Verify does basically the same thing. It creates a national database and the requirement that you get permission from the bureaucratic keepers of that data to work in America.
Giving up essential liberty to gain some small measure of security. Very small.
Giving up our liberty because our "leaders" wouldn't do their sworn duty.
F that. But the people of Florida are Nazis? LOL
That's what every illegal in Arizona will say. Then we have to let them go.
Of course, the ID can’t be used to defeat voting fraud or protect against illegal immigration. That would be “racist.”
How about we demand that they be a requirement to vote.
We already have national ID cards. How difficult would it be to add a photo or fingerprint option to it?
So the dems don’t want us asking invaders for proof of citizenship, but want all citizens to have to show it.... again, what would they do if we can’t prove it? Just walk like they do now? This would be harrassment for citizens with no change in how they deal with illegals.
I’m waiting for the obligatory Revelation 13 reference.
Actually, a lot of Christian colleges already require students to swipe in for (mandatory) chapel services. That seems to be a better and more easily-monitored system, since if it’s just a matter of detecting IDs, you could just have your friend carry your ID and skip class.
Why is it that liberals will claim that voter ID's are too much of a hardship for the poor, but this new ID is not?

How ‘bout someone propose to tie this ID to being a requirement to register, and vote?
Many countries have mandatory voting.
