A plan by Senate Democratic leaders to reform the nation’s immigrations laws ran into strong opposition from civil liberties defenders before lawmakers even unveiled it Thursday.
Democratic leaders have proposed requiring every worker in the nation to carry a national identification card with biometric information, such as a fingerprint, within the next six years, according to a draft of the measure.

State ID’s. If you want state services, (education, health care, welfare), or want to vote, produce a state ID. States do not provide information to the Federal government. I think that you have nailed it, ‘ggirl.

They seriously underestimate the intelligence of their opposition. A National ID is NOT needed. Enforcing of the laws already on the books ARE. [And where were these Civil Liberties groups when Obamacare was passed — or the stimulus bill that allows them to keep track of your checking and savings accounts, as well as ATM deposits and withdrawals in REAL-TIME???]
Just went through that here in WI, too. BC, Marriage License, Social Security Card, and a utility bill in my name to prove my address... REALLY ticks me off in light of how many documents Obama is hiding.
You could already if you are detained by police and don’t have valid ID on your person. Those laws have been on the books for forever — see vagrancy laws.
This proposal is a sign of desperation by the rats on immigration. The Real Id act was a reasonable proposal for national identification (standardization of state identification not a national id). It has been opposed on many fronts by some on the left and right. After 5 years, the Real Id Act looks doomed.
A national id (especially biometric) is a much larger undertaking. If enacted, the national id will never happen just as Real Id Act.
LEt me geat this straight. Checking the papers of people being pulled over is facist if Arizona does it, but national ID for US citizens is not?
I’ll see that the Democrats put a stop to this immediately...

First things first.
We CAN secure the borders.
Doing what AZ is doing, i.e. checking the status of people detained for relevant reasons. You know, the same reasons I have to provide ID for. Traffic stops, crimes, jobs, DL etc. A national ID is not needed for that. We just need to simply do it.
Require that employers verify legal status of new hirees. Which BTW, is done most of the time by law abiding employers.
If illegals have a lot more difficulty coming in, if they know they will get deported if caught doing anything illegal, including traffic violations, if they know they can’t get jobs. Well, there goes the illegal problem. A national ID isn’t needed to accomplish any of this.
Like most of the crap laws and regulations coming from the Dems (and Nanny Staters in DC), the purpose is to monitor and control the *legal and law abiding citizens*, not the criminals or illegals. Gun control being the perfect example.
