The U.S. Census Bureau is still having problems with its computer system that handles the data for households that did not return a census form. However, the Census Bureau director said the system has successfully printed out the assignments for the enumerators who will conduct in-person interviews with households that did not mail in their forms.
We continue to struggle with the software system called the paper-based operation control system, but we passed, just amazingly, a wonderful threshold last week where we printed out assignments for all these enumerators, said Census Bureau Director Robert Groves. It worked.
The Census director made the comments at a press briefing on the Census participation rate, which took place at the National Press Club in Washington on Thursday.
Groves said the Bureau is not fond of its paper-based operation control system (PBOCS), which is used to manage the non-response follow-up (NRFU). The NRFU, set to begin May 1, is the Census largest operation and involves census workers personally interviewing millions of people nationwide who did not respond to the mailed Census questionnaire.
"Slightly more than 72 percent of U.S. households believed to be occupied mailed back their 2010 Census forms, the same rate that was achieved in 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau announced on Apr. 28.
Not that it is the most loved piece of software in the Census Bureau, but its working well enough to get the census down so far, said Groves.
We have assignments ready for 600,000 people who are ready to hit the streets on Saturday, he added. So we're proceeding.

RE: “Original form?
I never received a the census form is coming, the census form is coming I never received the census form itself (short or long form) and I never received the letter to hurry and send it back in. oh yeah, and I live in a red district. I called the census line several times asking for a for-it was never sent to me. And as a last resort, I tried to get a form at the local library-the one in my red district said that they never got them. I called the library in the nearby blue district, was told they had them. When I got there the next day to pick one up I was informed that they were no longer available......
So, tell me, what more was supposed to do?”

Here in L.A., in a 99% ‘blue’ area, census form arrived right on time - preceding warning notices arrived as well; then notices stating ‘don’t forget to mail in census form’ - got two of those.
Was in local library and found dozens of blank census forms sitting on a table for anyone to help themselves. No one monitoring at all — anyone could grab a handful - naturally that would overrepresent on the ‘blue’ side, given the area, esp. if number of occupants was large.
A whole bunch of new Sanchez’s and Morales’s would do the trick. Charming.
This entire census effort has been a total joke and detrimental to any ‘red’ areas as evidenced by your post, above.
Because, with a very few exceptions, the people who can do it well, are doing it where they don't have to put up with government bureaucrats.
yet something else the Govt cannot do correctly despite the amount of money they have spent on it
I also forgot to mention that the several times that I called the toll free (non-) help line, everyone had a decidedly Spanish/Mexican/Hispanic/Caribbean lilt in their voice. Not being racist, just an observation..
If the government really had their shit together (?), seems like they would contract with Google, Mapquest or Delorme. All three have already done what the gvt is trying to do.
Idiots!
Ditto. Just waiting for follow-up. Will do my best to put the census worker on the defensive by requesting credentials, asking if they are authorized for making any statement they make or they just making it up, etc. Will refuse to respond to any phone calls at all as it is impossible to verify authenticity.
Let’s not forget the air traffic control systems they’ve tried to put into place over the years, with expensive non-results.
Didn’t the DMV and Welfa1re and Child Supp-ort programs all get “developed” in the same incompetent way in California? They’re putting my tax dollars in a huge blender, they’re so incompetent.
I thought the same thing I had the Constitution sitting by the front door but they called on the phone gave them a bunch of no comments and then just hung up.
Maybe it's a calling center in Jamaica, mon! When him 13 trillion dollars in debt, him gotta save money somehow, mon.
I’m in Roscoe Bartlett’s district (red), I’m a registered Republican, and I received a form. Of course, with MD voters being 2/3 Democrats, maybe the goobermint just wanted to make sure everybody was covered. );-)
We answered the same. Two people live here.
They know were we live. We pay income taxes and property taxes. They keep birth and death records.
If they call for more info, I will tell them that and to look it up.
They showed up at my house a couple hours ago, and I sent mine in the day after I got it.
Everything would have been fine, except the bureaucrats decided to divide by Zero to grow Acorns!
Everything the bastard does is detrimental to America.
In their minds illegals are citizens.
“Useful idiots” is more like it.
Everything the bastard does is designed to end the AMerixca you and I would recognize, and ‘transform’ the Republic into the sonofabitch’s dream of fascist/Marxist utopia.
How conveeeeeen-eeee-yent.
0bama is a very evil man. Satan prizes him.
