Gulf of Mexico Oil Slick Nears US Coastline
VOA News ^ | April 29, 2010 | Brian Wagner

Posted on 04/29/2010 8:03:13 PM PDT by myknowledge

Emergency crews in the Gulf of Mexico are deploying containment booms along the U.S. coastline as a massive oil slick from a damaged deepwater well approaches land. Experts say the slick might reach Mississippi River delta portions of the state of Louisiana by late Thursday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, says the sandy shores of the Louisiana delta lie directly in the path of the expanding oil slick as it moves west. Meteorologists say winds have been constant for several days, pushing the slick from the site of the damaged Horizon Deepwater oil rig. The rig exploded and sank last Friday, injuring several workers and leaving 11 others missing and presumed dead.

Charlie Henry, a science coordinator with NOAA, says Louisiana state officials have been deploying thousands of meters of booms along the coast to minimize the potential damage if the oil washes ashore.

"We have been planning for the unfortunate fact that this might happen," said Charlie Henry. "And the state [of Louisiana] has been responding and putting booms in for the last five days. It is not something that just happened yesterday."

Oil booms being deployed near Port Eads, Louisiana, 29 Apr 2010

This is gonna cause tens, let alone hundreds of million dollars for the clean up operation, even harden people's opinions about drilling for oil offshore.

that’s what the ecoweenie nutroots want... some asshat on my facebook posted “every asshole who said ‘drill baby drill’ should be made to help cleanup the oil spill” and I replied “and every ecoweenie moonbat who thinks this way should leave their college dorms and mothers basements and help ‘give back’ and ‘save the earth’ if they feel so strongly about it - it’s obvious you forget the huge part oil plays in your life as well; what powers your Pious? rainbows and unicorns?”

I was received with stony silence ;)

Not sure how practical it would have been to “boom” the slick near its origin. If there was a sea state I guess it would have been difficult.

Just cant help but think it would have been easier to contain as close to the source as possible.

Call me crazy but you know the old saying,”never let a good crisis go to waste.” I would not put it past the eco-nazis to create an event like this.

Who would have dared thought that The Usurper would meet his “Katrina” in Gulf Coast off of LA?
Of course, Corporate Media will find it impossible to see/report the irony of it all!

Actually, I know the importance crude oil plays in economic engines of the world, right down to the daily consumers. The whole world runs on black gold.

Why wasn't "commander zero" on this from day one? Just springs into action now that the oil is on the beaches?

Heard on Rush today that "SWAT Teams" were being deployed to oil rigs in the Gulf?

Anyone hear it? Do they suspect sabatoge?

Clearly this is a "crisis" that "zero" will not let go to waste and do I sound paranoid if I notice the timing and the incident itself are very fortuitous for his plans?

I have to begrudgingly note that CNN is covering this very well.
As someone who buys into none of the environmental nonsense about drilling, I am appalled at the fact that BP is totally incompetent.
They alone have screwed America as far as offshore drilling is concerned and are polluting our shoreline with no end in sight. If BP weren’t in so far over their heads I would entertain the thought that this was sabotage since it fits so well with the oil hating agenda of the libs.
It really sucks for Louisiana, a state that continues to get battered and is most likely ill-equipped to handle an environmental disaster of this magnitude.
I guess this is Bobby Jindal’s chance to shine.

When one of those idiots post that tripe on your page remind them that they are using an oil byproduct to post their talking points since computers are made of a whole lot of plastic parts and all plastics are derived from petroleum.

Who knows why that idiot did that. From what I’ve read Jindal is getting kind of frustrated with the way the idiot has responded to his requests since technically it’s in federal waters.

Have you not noticed? Acts of nature were blamed on bush, but under Obama, he is blamed for nothing bad that happens, its always someone elses fault and proof that america is flawed.

I totally agree with you, wanting a clean environment is a conservative issue. Would the BP CEO want this near his beachfront vacation home?

“Why did it take the feds so long to act??”

I heard a report today that the government has over 1,000 people active dealing with this crisis. It must have taken a few days to mobilize and get them on location. Initially BP thought they could close a shut-off valve, but they have been unsuccessful. Also, today, the amount of the problem was declaired 5 times larger than originally reported. I think I heard that this was a much lighter oil than the Exxon Valdez, and also they (BP and govt.) have been working on it much quicker and with better technology and skills.

“I would not put it past the eco-nazis to create an event like this.”

Rush, on his radio show Thursday, implied that Obama’s minions had a hand in this.

And where are the nuclear power plants that Obama promised in his State of the Union speech?

Speaking of BP:

AUGUST 1997 : (WASHINGTON DC : THE WHITE HOUSE : ENRON CEO KEN LAY & BRITISH PETROLEUM'S LORD JOHN BROWNE , BOTH KEY PROPONENTS OF THE CARBON CREDIT SCHEME, MEET WITH US PRES BILL CLINTON AND VP AL GORE IN THE OVAL OFFICE TO DEVELOP CLINTON ADMIN POSITIONS FOR KYOTO TREATY NEGOTIATIONS --See AGW/CLIMATE CHANGE HOAXES) Whatever its impact on the environment, the cap-and-trade carbon scheme is sure to boost the economic and political prospects of people and groups that are behind it. Before the company collapsed under the weight of financial scandal, Enron under CEO Ken Lay was a key proponent of the cap-and-trade idea. So was BP’s Lord John Browne, before he resigned last May under a cloud of personal scandal. In August 1997, Lay and Browne met with President Bill Clinton and Vice President Gore in the Oval Office to develop administration positions for the Kyoto negotiations that resulted in an international treaty to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Senate voted 95 to 0 not to ratify the Kyoto treaty in 1997. But that hasn’t stopped Al Gore. ----------------The Money and Connections Behind Al Gore’s Carbon Crusade Human Events ^ | 10/03/2007 | Deborah Corey Barnes http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1910887/posts

I wasn’t questioning, “why did it take so long for the feds to act”.

I was questioning the irony of the msm not holding Obama up to this SAME standard that they held Bush to in this SAME location.

You know.

Pres. Obama’s a racist because he doesn’t care about the people of New Orleans. . .
