AZ Governor Signs Nation's First Knife Preemption Law!

April 28: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has signed the the nation's first Knife Preemption Law, advanced by Knife Rights. The bill, SB1153, was passed by bipartisan votes of 36-19 in the Arizona House and 19-9 in the Arizona Senate. It will take effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns, expected this week, and not only prevents political subdivisions from enacting new ordinances and rules, but voids all existing restrictive knife ordinances. In combination with Arizona's recently enacted constitutional concealed carry law, knife owners in Arizona will enjoy the most accommodating knife laws in the country.

Click here to read the final bill with Governor Brewer's requested amendments incorporated (which improved the final bill).

The passage of Arizona's Knife Preemption Law is precedent setting for knife owner rights. Arizona is the first state to establish specific preemption for knife laws and this represents the successful kick-off of Knife Rights' National Knife Law Preemption Campaign, a key component of Knife Rights’ national legislative agenda to protect and enhance knife owners’ rights. Knife Rights anticipates that the Arizona preemption law will serve as a model for preemption efforts in other states whose citizens are subject to a similar patchwork of restrictive local knife laws with attendant civil rights issues. We have already been approached by a number of legislators and citizens who want to initiate knife law preemption for their states. Knife Rights will aggressively pursue these opportunities.

What woman would name her son “Crocodile?”

A fairly common name in Australia. Another famous one was Crocodile Hunter, a well known wildlife expert/conservationist.

Unfortunately, Mr Hunter was murdered by a stingray a few years ago.

Here in the peoples republic of Kaleefornia, your lead pencil or ball point pen fits Carole Migden's legal definition of a dirk or dagger and is a felony to even own, let alone carry.

Of course when that's explained to a jury holding notebooks and pencils the prosecutors begin to pout.

I have a lovely Bubunga wood folding horsehead Bowie that goes with me everywhere.

Something that does need attention is this stupid bidness of banning “switchblades” or automatic openers, or butterfly knives.

I’ve got several “assisted openers” that are legal in WA, but functionally there’s no practical difference between that and a switchblade. Same for any of the one-handed folders with a thumb stud or a hole like the Spyderco.

It’s not how the knife *opens* that matters in any way whatsoever. It’s a stupid rule.

How the West was won.

Off to send another card to our Govenor. As my husband would say, “What a mensch!”

my blade of choice. I used to recommend it to customers looking for a good utility knife. Heck when they saw several range employees carried these it was a sale. I use mine for reaching that last carton of milk on the top back shelf of the dairy cooler..:)

Switchblades are legal in Arizona and six other states.

A number of places have banned knives over a certain blade length, often 6”, 5 1/2”, 4”, I have even heard of a ban down to an unbelievable 1 1/2 inches!

Shy is it that some of the strongest candidates in the GOP are women?

I tell you, the curved tip is the most useful thing ever. It makes the knife much more employable than a straight blade. It’s sharp though, I am wondering if you have ever cut that milk carton while reaching it :D

“some of the strongest candidates in the GOP are women?”

My guess is that because they are a “protected class”, they are allowed to succeed further than men, who are mercilessly attacked in the MSM and the schools at the first sign of conservatism.

Totally agree. I can open and close that harpy with one hand, completely out of sight, and without sound. A person with an open blade that you do not know about is far more dangerous than someone who alerted you to their switchblade and which hand it is in by opening it.

It is the knife that was never seen that will get through.

Pretty women to boot.

We could get some nice young men
with nads in the mix also.

All these old codgers have been here too long.
They nads have shrunk up.

I always carry a Buck knife. CO. Never gave thought that it might be illegal? That’s nuts.

“It’s not how the knife *opens* that matters in any way whatsoever. It’s a stupid rule.”

I believe it is one of a number of really stupid “fad” laws that come from watching a popular movie or show. I think this one comes from “West Side Story”. The ban on nunchuks comes from the Bruce Lee movies, I think. A legislator thinks to make a name for them self, it works, and other legislators see an opportunity to aggrandize themselves at the public’s expense.

Much like “Its for the Children”, which I call political pedophilia.

Indeed. I teach this in my concealed carry class.

Apparently Tempe makes it illegal to carry a knife. Period. Guess I’ve violated their law every time I passed through. I’ve carried a knife in my pocket since the 3rd grade...where we used to practice throwing them on the playground at school!

When we were still a free nation, before the NEA took over the schools, school teachers would actually advise the boys in their class to carry pocket knives, because it taught responsibility and self reliance.
