US Catholic church attacks 'draconian' Arizona law

The US Catholic church on Tuesday condemned Arizona's "draconian" new immigration law, saying it would alienate immigrant communities across the United States.

"This new law, although limited to the State of Arizona, could have impact throughout the nation in terms of how members of our immigrant communities are both perceived and treated," Bishop John Wester said in a statement issued on behalf of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Does the Bishop know the difference between a lawful citizen and an illegal immigrant?

I truly do not understand why the Bishops are so judgmental and quick to condemn law abiding citizens. It is true that many Hispanics are honest and hard-working, and just want to enjoy the benefits of US citizenship. But, by jumping the line did they not displace others who wait? How do the bishops explain this? Jesus was not subject to the law of Moses, yet to teach obedience, he submitted to the laws. What example are the bishops giving to us by encouraging otherwise? It is confusing and counter-productive IMO.

As often as you willingly demonstrate your ignorance of Scripture you have no business telling anyone else to read the Bible.

I thank you very much for posting the catetechical position of the Roman Church; I put it up on Yahoo News web site where this article appears.

Even as an Excommunicant (consciously and voluntarily), I'm always -- very unpleasantly -- surprised how frequently the ravings of the USCCB (Bishops and subcomittees putatively speaking on its behalf) are taken as an opportunity for anticatholic bigotry on FR. The USCCB doesn't refect the political philosophy of observant Catholics. Had the country at large voted the way devout Catholics did in 2008, we would not now have the president we have.

FReepers should know their FRiends. Thanks again.

>>Stop contributing to every one of the annual Bishop fund raising campaigns in your diocese.<<

In our Diocese if the church doesn’t make it’s donation, it is taken from our coffers anyway.

Judging by earlier reports, they hadn’t read the bill. It’s embarrassing.

Statement of Most Reverend John C. Wester

Bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah

Chairman, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration

April 27, 2010

On behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), I join with the Catholic bishops of Arizona in strongly opposing the enactment and implementation of Arizona SB 1070. This new law, although limited to the State of Arizona, could have impact throughout the nation, in terms of how members of our immigrant communities are both perceived and treated.

SB 1070 gives law enforcement officials powers to detain and arrest individuals based on a very low legal standard, possibly leading to the profiling of individuals based upon their appearance, manner of speaking, or ethnicity. It could lead to the wrongful questioning and arrest of U.S. citizens and permanent residents as well as the division of families — parents from children and husbands from wives. It certainly would lead to the rise in fear and distrust in immigrant communities, undermining the relationships between their members and law enforcement officials.

SB 1070 is symptomatic of the absence of federal leadership on the issue of immigration. For years now, the U.S. Catholic bishops have called upon Congress and two Administrations to enact meaningful and just comprehensive immigration reform.

While many of our federal elected officials have made good faith efforts to pass reform, too many still view the issue through a political lens, using it to gain political or partisan advantage. This gamesmanship must stop.

Our national leaders must educate the American public on the need for reform and show courage in making it happen. Until immigration reform is passed, other States will attempt to create and enforce immigration law, with harsh and ineffective consequences.

The U.S. Catholic bishops stand in solidarity with the bishops of Arizona in opposing this draconian law. We call upon the Administration to review its impact on civil rights and liberties. We renew our call for the Administration and Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to enact comprehensive immigration reform as soon as possible.

It should be, “they can kiss my royal IRISH ass and I’m a Catholic” - is how My Dad would have put it so I will do so for him.

This is politics and not Church doctrine so I’m free to disagree. Let them show the courage to preach “social justice” to the Mexican government and let them recognize the “social justice” to which Americans are entitled - and them come and talk to me.

The Protestant vote did go solidly for McCain, the Catholic vote went solidly for Obama.

If Catholics voted like Protestants then Roosevelt would have had only two terms and the Democrats would not exist in the form they are in today.

I, too, am a Catholic. But I don't let this kind of stuff bother me or, God forbid, drive me away from God. This turkey was probably made chair of the migration committee for a good (meaning bad) reason--because it's his academic specialty, or because he's a flaming PC race monger, or the like.

The problem is that this is liberal Democrat party politics and Catholics vote accordingly, if we can ever get the Catholics to stop supporting these liberal policies then conservatives win.

It may not bother you, but it bothers those of us that don't like living under liberal Democrat government.

I am not glad that Obama is President.

The most effective way to deal with the USCCB is to not donate to Catholic Charities OR THE CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT.

The USCCB USES THIS MONEY FOR THE ILLEGAL ALIENS.

THE BISHOPS AND THE CARDINALS WITH THE SUPPORT OF ILLEGAL ALIEN WANT TO DO FOR THE USA WHAT THEY DID FOR MEXICO AND EUROPE WITH THE SOCIALISTIC AND MARXIST PROGRAMS!
