he furor over Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigrants grew Monday as opponents used refried beans to smear swastikas on the state Capitol, civil rights leaders demanded a boycott of the state, and the Obama administration weighed a possible legal challenge.
Activists are planning a challenge of their own, hoping to block the law from taking effect by arguing that it encroaches on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration and violates people's constitutional rights by giving police too much power.
The measure set to take effect in late July or early August would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.
"If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which is exploring legal action.
Employees at the Capitol came to work Monday to find that vandals had smeared swastikas on the windows. And protesters gathered for an eighth straight day to speak out against a law they say will lead to rampant racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic. The White House would not rule out the possibility that the administration would take legal action against Arizona. President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses, asked the Justice Department to complete a review of the law's implications before deciding how to proceed.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

"The Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown."
The sense of outrage, indignation that burns within me against the President of Mexico can be summed up in four words; FYFC, FY Felipe Calderon!!
And then you've got this, the most asinine, convoluted comment ever;
The crux of opponents' arguments is that only the federal government has the authority to regulate immigration.
"If every state had its own laws, we wouldn't be one country; we'd be 50 different countries," said Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
These Mexicans sure have a lot to say about us, what they're going to do to us without really thinking much about their own sorry state of internal affairs.
The Arizona law is turning out to be the very test case in which the future of our beloved Republic is at stake. If the Anti-America pro-illegal forces bear enough pressure down as to have the law rescinded, prevent it from being implemented, it would mean our very immigration as being held in the hands of the illegal immigrant community, and that we are all otherwise lost. Arizona! Our thoughts, prayers are with you!
70% of Arizonans are for this law, 61% of Americans are for it, the vocal minority against it needs to shut-up!
“the furor over Arizona’s new law”
A lot of violence and hate is seething in this anti law crowd. if anything happens in the future in AZ it is because
of the illegal alienbaggers.
I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but wasn't that sort of the intent of the law?
How many have read it? Very, very few..

“Tonight I shall be carrying on from where we got to last week when I was showing you how to defend yourselves against anyone who attacks you armed with a piece of fresh fruit.”
Next week I’ll explain how to defend yourselves against anyone who attacks you armed with refried beans.
Isn’t every law discriminatory, especially those that aim to regulate behavior?
This cannot be good for McCain’s reelection bid.
Funny when civil rights activists were arguing for socialized healthcare they kept insisting "look how many other countries have socialized medicine." But when you could use the same defense for being asked to show citizenship proof/papers you get "what do you think we are, Europe? We don't do that in America."
Yeah go ahead...use that excuse when it supports your agenda and ignore it when it doesn't. Americans are pissed...and we don't care if a few civil rights are violated. Hope other border states follow Arizona's lead...
Funny. The bill was signed and I didn’t see Armageddon today. The sky was blue! The birds were chirping! I even saw a unicorn and a rainbow. I was really “amused”.
“never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship,”
I’d be happy to be stopped to prove my citizenship, knowing the next one stopped may be an illegal.
Or they can pack up and illegally immigrate to Mexico.
That's exactly what happened the last time with all the angry illegal alien mobs marching in the streets. Just made American citizens more angry and determined to throw these A-holes out of the country. Hope they get even more unruly. As a group they are just dumb enough to do that. If you are an American out of work this sort of thing will not go over well, if it didn't go over well when times were good. Duh.
Untrue. Under the law the Police do not have the power to arbitrarily question anyone's citizenship. If they did, obama would never set foot in Arizona again. ;-)
The law does require Police to determine everyone's citizenship if/when they are arrested or otherwise come to the attention of the Police. So if I go to AZ and get a speeding ticket, they will have to determine my status.
If they are upset over this law, they should ask themselves just what has made it a necessity and supported by 70% of AZ residents. (legal residents that is) It is because illegal residents -- criminals -- have made such a problem in the State, 70% of the legal residents are willing to put up with the ID checks on everyone in order to reduce the problems caused by the illegals.
Oh GTFO!
These people are insane!
I'd be proud to produce citizenship proof. Unlike a lot of these interlopers...I'd be proud to show I'm a citizen of this great country! Those who fear this are illegally here or hiding from the law. Screw 'em.
Ummm,... let me see if I get this straight. The law encroaches on the federal government's authority to ignore the law which it is responsible to enforce. Should be a short trial.
