Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.
Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans support the law along with 62% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democratic voters are evenly divided on the measure.
At the same time, however, 58% of all voters are at least somewhat concerned that efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants will also end up violating the civil rights of some U.S. citizens. That figure includes 29% who are Very Concerned about possible civil rights violations.....

“No stopping a legally driven car to verify citizenship.”
If you have no DL and insurance (if your state requires it), you aren’t legally driving. The key is to stop ALL cars in roadblocks and check every one. This isn’t new in other states.
“Just wait until the price of childcare, cleaning, construction, restaurants and lawn care goes through the roof.”
John McLame, is that you?
The law requires that in order to even question you about your immigration status, there must be reasonable suspicion that you are not in the country legally.
IOW if you present a valid Arizona Driver's license, then the questioning would have to stop there, because your legal status has already been determined by the DMV.
But if you were driving without a valid license, did not have a valid registration on your car, had no proof of insurance, and you could not speak a word of English, then I think the officer might have a reasonable basis for suspecting that you are not legally in the State of Arizona.
You got a problem with that?
I doubt Arizona issues driver’s licenses to illegals. Not even California does that (Not YET anyway. The CA “illegal alien sympathizer” legislators have made NUMEROUS attempts to get licenses issued to aliens).
My point is.. If you have a DL, no worries. If you’re driving without a license, an officer has EVERY right to handcuff you at a minimum, with illegals getting the added deportation orders. That’s how it SHOULD BE anyway. In CA, an officer will arrest an illegal w/out a DL, but is prohibited from questioning citizenship. THAT’S not right.
3 cheers to Arizona. “Illegal” is illegal. What’s the fuss?
That's not the kind of country I want to live in.
Me too. My preference is that there already be probably cause, before they can begin to ascertain if you are in the country legally.
“That’s not the kind of country I want to live in.”
That *is* the country you live in. It’s been that way for years. DUI checks, insurance checks, and DL checks.
“The law requires that in order to even question you about your immigration status, there must be reasonable suspicion that you are not in the country legally.”
Thanks for the insight. I’ve been waiting for a bit more clarification on the rules. If it was “there’s a dark-skinned guy I’m stopping him” - forget it. (Too easily could become “there’s an older white guy with a fanny pack, I’m stopping him to see if he has a gun”.
I hope that the cops get updated on all of the things to look for in forged documents. I hear that is a big deal, and too easy for the illegals to obtain and show to their employers for work.
I have never been stopped at a roadblock in Texas.
“I have never been stopped at a roadblock in Texas.”
I have.
That’s exactly what we want. Maybe you’re a coyote smuggling illegals across the boarder. /s
Don’t be ridiculous, the cops aren’t going to pull you over while driving Mexican. (most won’t)
Stupid law. I’d hate it if a cop asked me for my papers and they could. If they can ask a Mexican looking guy they can ask a non-Mexican looking guy.
Forget this “show me your papers” mentality. It’s wrong.
It is such a shame that our society has sunk so deep into Political Correctness, that they won’t even say...*Yes we are targeting illegals of hispanic origin* WHY?
Because the people coming over the border from Mexico illegally happen to be hispanic....that’s racist????
Maybe they need to say: We are going to be targeting illegals coming from Mexico that look like Albinos....
*This is your head on crack..*I mean Political Correctness*
If you present a forged document to a cop for purposes of identification, that alone is a felony. That alone should be a one way ticket to deportation.
Texas Senate OKs 2 bills to aid in fight against drunken drivers
That's not necessarily true.
As long as you decide that anyone who disagrees with you on a single issue represents all that is bad or evil in the world, then you have absolutely no chance of ever changing their minds because you have decided that they are "the enemy".
I don't believe that 31% of the US population are "hardcore Leftists". Of that number, I'd guess that no more than a few percent are. Some have genuine concerns about this specific law and voted their conscience, and the vast majority are just riding along on their "feelings" without even thinking about it -- this latter group can be converted and must be converted if there is any hope of ever turning around this country.
