Sales tax revenue plummets in Sacramento region

In the last five years, sales tax revenue in the Sacramento region dropped by $76 million as consumers increasingly stayed home in the harsh economy, a Bee survey finds.

The Bee looked at revenue streams for 18 local governments, including Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado and Placer counties, and 14 cities.

Billions of dollars in sales disappeared locally, and with it a large share of the funds local governments have used to run police departments, parks and libraries. All but three localities saw sales tax revenue drop. Thirteen experienced double-digit declines.

Among the biggest losers were cities whose treasuries overflowed earlier in the decade: Folsom, Roseville and Elk Grove. A good chunk of their sales tax revenue came from auto malls, which were particularly hurt in the national recession.

Texas state sales tax revenue:

$1,653.1 million in December 2009
$1,655.3 million in January 2010
$1,595.2 million in February 2010
$1,458.9 million in March 2010

But retail sales are improving. Ya right.

The VAT will drive almost everything underground, or beat the economy into submission.

EXACTLY...that’s why I’ve been pushing my husband to make sure we’ve bought pretty much everything we need (furniture, hard goods) for the next 10 years.....will NOT buy anything if the taxes are going to be so high...lucky for us we’re older (in some ways, at least) ..I feel for you younger ones ....

Oh yes, it will. I for one am buying anything that I want right now. I do not have a lot of desires though, I have most of the big ticket items that I can imagine I would need for much of the rest of my life. My frig broke about three weeks ago, so I was able to replace that VAT free.

I wwould seriously rather go with nothing for the rest of my life knowing that my sacrifice is starving this cancerous government of their much needed blood money. Screw them.

Hell, just raise the sales tax rate.

Consumers have to buy SOMETHING, and when they do we'll rape them.

Simple as that.

IIRC, countries that utilize a VAT, don't have a sales tax.
I'm suuuure NY state would be happy to be first to drop its sales taxes for the greater good, the greedy b@stards.

I know exactly how you feel on that as I feel for people younger than me (im 38 now). I have been lucky. I was able to secure some nicer things earlier in life, and I am very satisfied. I live modestly, and I don’t dream large. In fact, my only dream is to live free.

If worst comes to worse, I will take every penny out of the bank and market, I will buy nothing whatsoever, and I will live off my garden. I will never submit to the US federal cancerous government.

Seems it back to 2006 numbers. I wonder what the state did with the extra sales tax money in 2007,2008, 2009.

Did everyone notice, again, that the sales tax taken in began to plunge the moment Big Zero had the nomination wrapped up late 2007 / early 2008?

The Obama Depression!

You get one every time you nominate a Marxist for President !!!!!!

Wanna see something disturbing? Go to the Franchise Tax Board or the State Board of Equalization and try to gather current sales tax data.... two years old... what a joke.

No wonder California is broke.
