CHeck the term - “Rods from God” (no disrespect, it is the name used...)
kinetic energy weapons - sometimes nicknamed “rods from God” in reference to objects directed from space at target(s) on earth
basic idea is that a well aimed rod (e.g., of tungsten) hitting an earth target from an orbital velocity (such as well upwards of 20,000 mph) would provide immense kinetic energy to destroy quite a variety of surface or underground targets - no nuke or explosive warhead would be needed b/c there would already be such forces involved upon impact
don’t know how seriously it’s been pursued in R&D anywhere but it seems to have a lot of potential
Much of the rod would ablate off from atmospheric friction, but what was left, like a sufficiently large meteorite, would still strike with an explosive force.
This one needs to be gotten to Palin’s folks...
The Iranian nuke facilities would make succulent targets for tungsten-cored missiles.
Another push-button precision strike weapon...cool.
Yeah, but you gotta waste an ICBM to get it there.
The “Navigational Errors” you mention have precedent. Remember when we lost a F-117 Stealth Fighter in the Balkans? A couple days later, a cruise missile struck the Chinese embassy due to that or some similar error.
It is my opinion that the Chinese had ‘obtained’ parts of the F-117 and the strike was intended to destroy these components.
On the Clintoon watch, of course.
“...the North Dakota fields are conventional...”
Did they ever get back the internal launch cards/circuitry which Clinton had removed?
Code word:
Rodney from Godney!
Just a bunch of tungsten telephone polls in clustered orbit with an orbital ground penetrating radar/GPS aiming device.
Gravity sucks dun’n it!
Ya, living at the bottom of a gravity well makes life difficult if someone starts throwing rocks.
This type of weapon is already part of the conventional arsenal - anti-tank, anti-ship rounds
yes but I was referring to when/if such a weapon could be used on more “strategic” targets such as hitting a WMD facility from the other side of the planet, via space
