Panamanian president announces oil has been found in the Darien area

Panamanian president Ricardo Martinelli announced Thursday there was oil in the Darien jungle and he planned to expand the mining industry in Panama while protecting the environment.

“Even if you don’t believe it, I am going to say something I shouldn’t say, Panama has oil in the Darien area, we are doing studies and have confirmed it, that the same veins from Colombia reach Panama,” the president said Tuesday.

Ricardo Martinelli discussed Panama’s potential energy resources in an address to the Annual Conference of Business Executives organized by the Panamanian Business Executives Association, or APEDE.

They knew ( know) about many oil reserves, it's no different than in Hollywood, you don't release all your movies at once.

If only Bush were still POTUS, then we could find an excuse for a "regime change" and raise our gasoline prices to make the Panamanians fabulously wealthy.

Going to be expensive production in the Darien Gap. But if it's a decent play the big boys will be all over it. I would like to hear more details and not from El Presidente.

The Darien Gap is nowhere near and has nothing to do with the Canal, which is the only part of Panama that used to be under US control.

What people should be worrying about is the porous border between Panama and Colombia, where a lot of the FARC guerrillas hide out. Security in that area is going to be a bear.

Great news.

While the presidents of the U.S. have been keeping our country in a banana state, Panama has surpassed that.

I love Martinelli.

By the way, he gives his presidencial salary to three charities.

Maybe the U.S. can buy oil from Panama since the U.S. politicians don’t allow for digging.

Panama is all set for the future...Good news!!!
