Blagojevich sends not-so-subtle message to Obama
Chicago Tribune ^ | 4/23/2010 | John Kass

Posted on 04/23/2010 9:53:57 AM PDT by mojito

Rod Blagojevich finally made good on a promise: He put President Barack Obama right in the middle of Blagojevich's own political corruption case.

And now it's finally clear why, from the moment of Blagojevich's arrest in December 2008, White House spinners loudly portrayed our former Gov. Dead Meat as some drooling, raving lunatic.

A lunatic is not to be believed, and Dead Meat will continue to be characterized as such by Obama defenders. But raving lunatics care little for their own survival. And in an amazing defense motion filed Thursday, Blagojevich proved once again that he is quite sane.

He wants Obama to testify in his federal criminal case. The feds allege that Blagojevich conspired to sell off Obama's old U.S. Senate seat, among other charges.

Obama's former patron and real estate fairy, the convicted influence peddler Tony Rezko, is a key player in the government's case. Blagojevich's aim is to undercut what Rezko has told investigators.

[....]

Thursday's filing quotes an account by Rezko suggesting that when Obama was an Illinois state senator, his campaign received political cash from Rezko. It also points to assertions by Rezko insinuating that he and Obama had conversations about a casino deal in Rosemont that Rezko stood to make a killing on.

[....]

It's no secret that some in journalism get offended when anyone dares mention that the president was involved in Chicago politics. But the filing is not only a legal document, it's a political message from Blagojevich to Obama. So allow me to translate the Chicago Way.

"Dear Barack, my old friend. I want you to use all your powers, all your skills, to make me an offer I can't refuse. I'm Mr. Celebrity-get-me-out-of-here, and you better get me out of here. Thanks, Rod."

Assessing the Blago situation from my temporary perch in a Chicago suburb, folks around here are rooting for the guy like you wouldn't believe.

Numero uno, Blago is an ethnic (Serbian) in an ethnic city. He looks like a composite of all the Poles, Slavs, Bohemians, Albanians, Hungarians, etc. that populate Chicago and the northern Illinois suburbs to the max.

Two, all these ethnics have taken his side against the hated Feds and Fitz.....few in these parts (Republicans, Dems, small "L" libertarians, ethnics) have any love for the federales of ANY country and its always-suspected authority.

Except for the most law-abiding pecksniffians, everyone I talk to is pulling for little Blago, maybe sheepishly, maybe going against their own grain, but that's how it is.

Third, the guy is like a lovable fuzzball, a cupcake with M & M's studding the buttercream frosting on top. He sings on the sidewalk in front of a crowd, he goes on reality shows, he even has his own talk show on a major Chicago radio station.

This court case, as Barnum would put it, will turn out to be one of the greatest show trials on earth, with every performer doing his own trick and performing his own agenda.

This includes the judge, the star prosecutor, the defense lawyers, the defendent, those mighty and powerful politicians and other elite who have or will be subpoened, the liberal city media, the jury, Da Mare of Chicago (Daley) hovering in the background, on and on in the cast of diverse characters.

Only the court reporters and janitors will not have an agenda.....at least maybe....they probably are SEIU union members in this City of Big Shoulders, Hog Butcher to the World, and Painted Women in the Streets.

Just like Bubba did to Monica until the blue dress surfaced. She was just stalking the President of the United States surrounded by how many secret service agents and other staff!

Thank goodness for holding on to "mementos"

Seems to me that he would know this and would have taken steps to make sure things come out in the case of his demise. Thoughts?

Pretty sure Obama would convince them that he couldn’t be there in person and do it via satellite link.

I'd be surprised if it gets past a deposition. I can't imagine -- unless something major really does surface -- that a sitting President would be compelled to testify in a court trial.

As a resident of Crook County Illinois I'm pulling for Blago. Like pulling a hand grenade pin and throwing it into pack of wolves. Sure I would like to see him in an orange jump suit. But if letting him walk is the price of bringing down Obama and the Democrat Machine here then I'm all for it.

Obviously you do. Somehow I missed the “apparent suicide” in your post.

I think he's arrogant. I think he's desperate and is willing to take a risk. I think also that he believes he can go toe-to-toe with Rahm and win. He's from Chicago and they are accustomed to playing rough there, so he probably realizes what a dangerous thing he's doing. He may be gambling that it would just be too difficult and awkward to kill him off. Hard to say if he's right or not.

Dead on (no pun intended). I am sure Blago has lots and lots of his own “depositions” sitting with various people in various locales which will hit the front pages of every newspaper and be on all the blogs instantaneously in the unforeseen event of his unexpected death. Who knows, maybe Blago will turn out to be a dead patriot.

He is arrogant for sure but I’m anxious to see how his pulling out all the stops will end up. Saying that this will be interesting is probably a gross understatement and nobody should be surprised if he does end up in the river in such poor condition.

If Blago was a republican, Kass would be championing his criminal prosecution. Kass comes out fingerpointing like crazy about Obama's Chicago "political guys" as not doing their job in keeping this Blago mess from getting close to Zeroman.

Mr. Kass, what are you suggesting they should've done? Bought off certain prosecutors??

Kass is a whining libtard, but I tend to agree with his "Chicago Way" translation on how Blago hopes this will all turn out. And how it well may.....
