FDA plans to limit amount of salt allowed in processed foods for health reasons
Washington Post ^ | April 20, 2010 | Lyndsey Layton

The Food and Drug Administration is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans, saying that less sodium in everything from soup to nuts would prevent thousands of deaths from hypertension and heart disease. The initiative, to be launched this year, would eventually lead to the first legal limits on the amount of salt allowed in food products.

The government intends to work with the food industry and health experts to reduce sodium gradually over a period of years to adjust the American palate to a less salty diet, according to FDA sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the initiative had not been formally announced.

Officials have not determined the salt limits. In a complicated undertaking, the FDA would analyze the salt in spaghetti sauces, breads and thousands of other products that make up the $600 billion food and beverage market, sources said. Working with food manufacturers, the government would set limits for salt in these categories, designed to gradually ratchet down sodium consumption. The changes would be calibrated so that consumers barely notice the modification.

The legal limits would be open to public comment, but administration officials do not think they need additional authority from Congress.

Hmmm....they won’t keep the illegals out of our country but they’re gonna keep the salt out of our food? I must have been mistaken when I thought what I eat is my choice. This PC bs and the collectivism is bearing down harder and faster every day.

Oh, I forgot they know better than we do!/sarc

"A return to a strictly Constitutional form of federal government will automatically repeal and abolish all unconstitutional federal involvement in states issues such as: crime, health, education, welfare and the environment. The Tenth Amendment will again be in effect, which will bar all federal attempts at legislating social issues."

When will the idiots realize that food salted while cooking takes less salt than what you add after to make it palatable if someone forgot to throw it in at the beginning?

I could make a lot of logical arguments about how the science doesn’t support this, but the best argument is based in freedom. It’s not the government’s job to dicate how we eat. Even if we choose to eat the “wrong” things, it’s not the government’s business. Period.

The FDA needs to be told to stick to its job of ensuring safe food and drug supplies. That’s its only function.

We’ll soon be having to show ID and sign for a box of salt along with our cold medications.

Remember this project the next time the Fraud and Drug Administration says it doesnt have the staff to monitor the safety of stuff coming into the country from China.

Of course it doesn’t. Those folks are too busy on a new project testing the salt content of spaghetti (as if this hasnt been done before).

In a perfect world, a citizen's salt intake would be no one else's business. We don't live in that perfect world.

We as a society pay for the health care of these saltaholics with our tax dollars. Let's abolish the welfare state, then you can have all the salt you want.

It is all about control. Once they force Americans to eat less salt it will be something else. It is a sickness.

A lot of dumbed down Americans voted for Obama and the Democrats. They will be sniveling loudly as soon as the feds feel the need to control or ban something that they enjoy.

What happens when some rebel decides to make his own salt? Will he be gunned down in the streets? We had to shoot him to protect his health.
