The Problem With Palin
American Spectator ^ | April 19, 2010 | Quin Hillyer

Sarah Palin, 55 percent unfavorable poll ratings notwithstanding, is a political phenomenon the likes of which American public life rarely has seen. There's something distinctive, something deeply personal, about the way her legions of strong supporters rush not just to defend her but to counter-attack any and all of her critics. Palin has a way of establishing a sense of connectedness with her backers -- such a strong, attitudinal sense that she is not just like them but one of them -- that she has created what amounts to a one-woman, conservative "identity politics" writ very, very large.

Yet if conservatives are to continue a political love affair with this admirable and galvanizing woman, we need to insist on more than mere identity. And more than mere attitude.

We know that Sarah Palin shares our conservative values. But is she the leader conservatives need?

IN HER RECENTLY RELEASED memoir, Going Rogue, Palin tells a story about how she approached the first state budget she handled as governor. It sounds like something right out of the 1993 Kevin Kline movie, Dave, except that Palin's tale is fact instead of fiction.

We worked late into the night with the warm midnight sun still pouring through my office windows....Pens in hand, we combed through the budget, line by line, page by page -- my inner nerd coming out again, just like Wasilla City Council days....I had to know what was in there, or I wasn't doing my job. We spent days trying to decipher who put in what and why. Late one night, I looked up from the table and asked our veteran staffers, "What did past governors do? How did they get through these budgets with so little detail?" "They didn't," was the response.

It was a half-assed quote taken out of context by George Will when he tried to use it against her when he should have used it against Obama who lacked all executive experience. Unfortunately, for George Will, “self-governernce” is far different from the “federal governance” that passes for “experience” today.

You state that politicians who stay in one office while running for another are not noble. When it is pointed out that this is exactly what Palin did you add qualifiers.

When pointed out to you that after she did quit Palin has spent most of her energy pursuing financial gain via media you angle that fact to fit an undeclared candidacy.

That is the problem. The facts are the facts. Your spin on them is either hypocritical or supposition.

All those points may be true, but the fact is Americans do not like quitters.

I wont cry when Romney wins the nod. I dont think he or Palin will win the nomination. They are both DOA in my opinion.

Good, glad to know that you haven’t gone completely to the dark side of no return. I’ve been concerned.

Fine, a thread but not a poll. Then where exactly does the statement that the wide majority of freepers support Palin find its substantiation?

EXACTLY!!!!.....

The “Ye of little faith conservatives”

or as Thomas Paine explained it so much more eloquently..

“These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands now deserves the love and thanks of men and woman. Tyranny like hell is not easily conquered yet we have this consolation with us, the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value.”

-Thomas Paine, American Revolution

Is that any different than many other elected candidates who have for president and left their elected position either before or after the election?

Didn’t Kerry, McCain, Gore, Dole, etc. all ignore their elected positions to run?

How is this substantially different than GW Bush who won a 2nd 4 year term as Texas governor in 1998 only to leave it in the hands of his LtGov in 99 so he could seek the GOP nomination as president and then resign it with 2 years to go due to inauguration as president.

So, I would say that folks are being hard on Palin, and mind you, I’m no republican but an independent conservative and Palin has by no means wrapped up my support.

I just know a railroading when I see one.

To her credit she WAS being drained by frivolous lawsuits allowed by Alaska law, and she DID leave her successor time to establish encumbent status.

“Palin was the only one of the four people on either ticket last time that had actually run anything, yet she’s the one who’s credentials people question.”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It is amazing, I once commented on Obama’s lack of experience and a FReeper responded by saying that I would “Have to admit” that Obama had more experience than G.W. Bush had when he took office. Where they got that absurd idea I don’t know but it was absurd indeed.

This is simply more flapdoodle to add the the Palin flapdoodle pile. Palin is as qualified as anyone else - if the people want her to be president. I also suspect that Palin would be happy to serve as V.P. or in the cabinet as well.

The bottomline is this - conservatives are blessed to have her out and about as we approach the November mid-term. Is there anyone else out there - besides the entire tea party - creating so much buzz on the issues - a voice against Obama - when Palin talks, people listen - to her positive message, her conservative message with the left also always there is case she trips up. It’s all good, she’s a Conservative Rock Star!

The only evidence we have of Palin's intentions is her actions since quitting. They revolve around enriching the Palin brand.

As for folks being hard on Palin, that is exactly my point. Her opponents and the MSM will savage her over the timing and manner in which quit in Alaska, should she declare for POTUS. She gave them the hammer. They will use it. IMO...she has rendered herself unelectable.

I had to go back to see exactly what rbmillerjr posted...

FR supports Palin as do many conservatives and Tea Partiers across the country.
You Palin haters are merely a vocal minority.

Okay, *Jim* supports Sarah and several active members support her. Ditto for conservatives and Tea Partiers as evidenced by the massive crowds she attracts wherever she goes.

LOL. Yep, Palin haters are a small, but vociferous minority here, which started here with her support for her former runningmate. That crap has grown tiresome. She announced that ahead of time when he only had Simcox for a challenger, so all the uproar is really disingenuous, and IMO, from people who weren't fans of hers anyway. For my part, I am more unhappy that she endorsed Ron Paul's son.

Either Romney or Palin will win the nomination.

Mark it down, bank on it. If not, come tell me I’m wrong. But I will be correct.
