In the face of severe climate risks, credible scientists are beginning to study geo-engineering -- tinkering with global systems to reduce warming directly.

Ahh yes, we must control the temperature of the entire planet -what could go wrong?

I think geo-engineering is an interesting thing to study, but I think it's feasible on only smaller areas.

Orbital mirrors that can reflect or block the sun could alter areas a few miles across, but at great expense.

Actually, anyone who buys, subsribes to or reads the LA Slimes is a blithering idiot.

This is not new information. Well, perhaps it is for the LA Slimes. But I seem to recall reading something along these very same lines over a decade ago.

Mount St. Helens did the same thing, as did Saddam Hussein when he torched the oil wells in Kuwait when he exited. Both incidences caused the temperature to drop 2-3 degrees. And we are supposed to be alarmed by a couple 10ths of a degree over the course of a century because of AGW?

One scheme is to spew sulfates or other sun-blocking particles miles high in the stratosphere. If it worked, it would mimic the natural cooling effect of volcanoes, replacing the near-surface sulfate mask with a much higher one. But the possible side effects could be dire, including damage to the ozone layer. The potential geopolitical implications, like wars over the thermostat, could be devastating as well.
