The French Quarter Fracas: More Clarity, And More Insults (Updated, 1:01 a.m, 4/18/10)
The Hayride ^ | April 18, 2010 | Scott McKay

Friday, Allee Bautsch’s mother Della Berning appeared by phone on Fox News to speak about the events of last weekend on behalf of Allee and her boyfriend.

Video of that interview follows:

Earlier today, Yahoo! News posted a story with another interview with Ms. Berning in which her confirmation of a political cause for the attack on her daughter and her boyfriend is more explicit:

Contrary to our initial report, the NOPD is now saying that it does not know whether or not the attacks were politically motivated and the police report lists the motive as unknown. However, Allee Bautsch’s mother, Della Berning, has now joined a friend of Bautsch’s in telling Yahoo! News that, contrary to what Brown initially told police, Bautsch and Brown do believe that the attackers were a group of political protesters who followed them after they left the event. Their recollection is not conclusive, of course, and they admit to having no knowledge of the attackers’ underlying motivations.

According to Berning, Bautsch and Brown are recovering from their injuries and the trauma of the attack, and so are not speaking directly to the media. However, the couple authorized her to come forward with their account of the attack. Berning told Yahoo! News that she reconfirmed with her daughter each detail of the account she offered via email and phone.

For the most part, the police report and Berning’s account of the assault on Bautsch and Brown line up. Bautsch and Brown attended a Republican Party fundraiser that coincided with the Southern Republican Leadership Conference that happened in New Orleans that week. The event drew protesters, some of whom remained after it concluded.

And a little more:

The police report and the subsequent account of the attack that Bautsch and Brown gave to Bautsch’s mother mainly differ on the question of whether the attackers were from the group protesting the fundraiser. According to the police report, Brown told them that he “was unsure if the attackers were protestors.” Berning says her daughter and Brown believe that they were.

Berning explained that on the night of the attack, because of the furious nature of the assault and the late night, the two didn’t want to say for certain that they knew the identity of the attackers. “You don’t want to say something like that to the police” and get someone in trouble with the law, she explained, “unless you’re absolutely sure.”

But while they don’t claim certainty, Bautsch and Brown believe the attackers did come from the group of protesters. Berning said the two felt followed immediately after leaving the restaurant where the protesters were, and the attackers looked like some they had seen in front of the restaurant.

But while the Yahoo! News story appears to grudgingly admit the obvious, that the protestors at Brennan’s produced the attack, reporter Bret Michael Dykes still manages to inject an obnoxious and insulting paragraph toward the end of the piece:

Of course, even if Bautsch and Brown’s recollection is correct and the attackers did come from the group protesting the event, they can’t know for sure what their motives were. Their account of the non-political nature of the verbal assault matches the one Brown gave police and the homophobic, misogynistic nature of the insults would be unusual coming the kind of person one might expect to protest a Republican fundraiser.

So anarchist thugs who attack people on the streets for their political beliefs are still morally superior because only Republicans are homophobes and misogynists? Seriously? This actually made it into a story Yahoo ran on their site?

Although the possible political nature of the episode has drawn national media attention

HUH? The MSM has been largely silent.

You know, I heard the interview on Fox, and I thought (just my impression, nothing else) that the woman sounded afraid. Not just for her daughter’s injuries, but for more than that. Personally, I wonder if there were some threats about speaking out.

You could be correct, but if she has lived in N.O. all her life, she should know that the NOPD sometimes has...problems. I only lived there for about 15 years, and I figured it out. A lifetime resident should know.

"You see, Allee and Joe are expendable for the Greater Good of New Orleans tourism. Can’t frighten the dollars away from the French Quarter, doncha know."

This is the issue we should be using to keep this thing rolling: a conservative boycott of New Orleans, and possibly Louisiana, if these people are not brought to justice. Personally, I wouldn't visit the place right now. My Sara Palin pin might get me stomped. If I say anything indicating my conservatism, I could get hurt. And the NOPD seems disinclined to do anything about it. So why would I want to go to such a place? Why would anyone?

Get used to threats or go hide under your bed! We are not playing games! The marxists intend to finish us off as a politial force once and for all, why isn’t this obvious?

Yeah right. This is the same left who gleefully launched misogynistic attacks against Sarah Palin. They sexualized her, wished to see her gang raped, etc.

The idea that the left is too nice to do this kind of thing is ridiculous.

Swampsniper, I think a lot of us know without talking to the twits you spoke with yesterday. Certainly it’s true of “that side” of congress—they have no original thoughts, only their talking points, and the demonstrators are much the same, except with more hatred. I have no patience for pols “reaching across the aisles” or “building bridges.” What they SHOULD be building is jails to house these creeps, including those in government (from the top on down).

I think a few doubts I had about Jindal are starting to be realized. One fear I had was that he would be the governor representing New Orleans more than the governor of Louisiana. This whole incident is starting to reek of big time cover up. Frankly a Rat governor couldn’t do any worse in the way this is being handled.

Those who love freedom are going to have face up to fear at some point. Some are ready, some aren’t, but I think the country is running out of time.

So why would I want to go to such a place? Why would anyone?

You are totally right about that. I live about a hour drive from New Orleans, no way would I put myself and my family's lives a risk by going there. One of the first rules of self defense is to avoid dangerous situations if possible, New Orleans is a dangerous situation.

Are Allee Bautsch and Joe Brown Expendable?
04/18/2010 by Walter Abbott

Save one press statement almost a week ago, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has remained mute about one of his employees and her date who were viciously attacked by protesters over a week ago in New Orleans’ French Quarter. They were attacked and beaten on the sidewalk literally outside the Louisiana Supreme Court Building, after attending a GOP fundraiser at Brennan’s Restaurant earlier in the evening of Friday, April 9.

According to sources, Jindal is reluctant to comment because he’s afraid that New Orleans’ reputation as a lawless cesspool would be further damaged. We had last week called upon Gov. Jindal to enlist the help of the U. S. Justice Department and the Louisiana State Police in investigating the crime, due to the ongoing problems within the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).

The question is, then, are Bautsch and Brown expendable in order to further the Greater Good of New Orleans tourism dollars? Do we conservatives have to offer up some sort of half-assed sacrifice from time to time in order to appease the gods of political correctness?

So far, the only official that has had the stones to describe what happened that night is Louisiana GOP Chair Roger Villere, Jr. He granted an interview to Lincoln Parish News Online two days ago and told us his recollection of events.

And forget about the Dinosaur Media actually getting up off their lazy behinds and doing real reporting – like actually interviewing people who were there.

We had contrasted this event with what the media’s likely response had it been staffers of Senator Mary Landrieu who were beaten. And also contrast this with how they reported the fictitious claims of racial slurs and spitting during Tea Party events.

So now are conservative activists legitimate targets to be attacked at will? We need to know the rules going in, we suggest.

I understand your frustration. A lot of people would rather believe that the “other side” is still...sane and law abiding. WE know that is no longer true. “They” don’t want to think of their fellow countrymen that way. They would rather believe that somehow this is all “just politics” and it will go away.

They are VERY MISTAKEN.

I hope more will wake up, but I wonder if it is too late. Prosperity can make a people ‘comfortable’ and not realize their freedom is at stake here, not just which party is in power. That is the real crime with the extend and pretend from the MSM. Green shoots and recovery are just lies. Some people WANT to believe it, and so are not alarmed. IF the true nature of the economic AND political tsunami that is coming our way were understood by the ‘average’ person in the street, well, that would be a sight to behold.

And that might be where getting though to the more ‘timid’ among us could focus the media blitz. Expanding the base for awake citizens would be a good thing.

This is a Huckabee free the felon moment for Jindal. Imagine any employer not coming out against this crime and demanding a complete and rapid investigation of the events . Not to mention a public statement denouncing this kind of violence against anyone visiting this stink hole .He will wear this thing like an anchor .

Perhaps the GOP should publish some sort of calculation of how many casualties to expect whenever there is a high-profile political event where the public is invited. And maybe base it on the city where its held, time of night, whether protests from anarchists are expected, etc...

Yes, I read it when it came out. What I’m wondering is - assuming LA law allows it - why wasn’t the interview recorded? Otherwise, all you got is “my friend heard it, too!” when someone says you lied.

“You have to remember that the intent of the State-Run Media and the Governor and the NOPD is to KEEP THIS OUT OF THE HEADLINES.”

The key word there is “media” - if you can’t give them video, then give them an audio. If not for his love of audio-taping his chats (the Watergate Tapes), Nixon would not have been forced out of office.

If anyone does ask Jindal (or any other official) about this I hope they have a small recorder running. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time as the official can easily later deny everything they said - as happened in the case with the police official. Without any proof, you’ve only got “He Said, She Said”.
