Israel is said to have deployed intelligence agents throughout the Gulf region. A senior Gulf Cooperation Council official asserted that Israel's Mossad has established an espionage network in Gulf Arab states. The official said the Israeli agents operate under the cover of European executives.

"If we arrest any one of them, though, it could be a major breakthrough," Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan, a senior security official in the United Arab Emirates, said.

Khalfan, police chief of the UAE city of Dubai, confirmed an Israeli newspaper report that the Mossad has long been working in the Gulf region. The report said the Mossad agents were working under the cover of multi-national companies.

"Yes, it is true," Khalfan said on April 5.

In an interview with Qatar's Al Sharq daily, Khalfan said GCC states were struggling to counter the alleged Mossad presence. He said GCC security chiefs have failed to discuss the issue in the wake of the assassination of Hamas procurement chief Mahmoud Al Mabhouh in January 2010. The UAE has blamed the Mossad for Al Mabhouh's death in a Dubai hotel.

"I have personally requested GCC secretary-general Abdul Rahman Al Attiyah to look into the matter and convene such a meeting," Khalfan said. "Al Attiyah, in fact, backed the idea and said he would raise the matter at the meeting of GCC interior ministers. But I assume that the interior ministries here do not attach much importance to the issue."

Khalfan said Iran has also maintained an intelligence presence in GCC states. He did not rule out a confrontation between the Mossad and Iranian agents in a Gulf Arab country.

"If such crimes [Al Mabhouh assassination] are repeated, the membership of Israel in the United Nations and its various agencies should be cancelled," Khalfan said.

...asserted that Israel's Mossad has established an espionage network in Gulf Arab states.

For many decades -- not exactly a revelation. And God bless them.

Amazing, the most secretive organization in the world and the world press, or anyone else for that matter, is aware of it’s activities! Go figure.

The Mossad understands that as the world economies integrate what better way to conduct business, but as an European Executive. Look at the Hamas hit on Mahmoud Al Mabhouh. UAE security services identified at least 17 possible suspect from all regions of Europe. In some respects what the UAE revealed was impressive, but on the the Mossad understood that the intel apparatus could simplify be defeated with overwhelming visiting Europeans.

"It's almost as if these Mossad agents weren't even really there, they're that good." Thanks sonofstrangelove.

OH, and this is “news” in 2010?

I’ll bet Mossad was operating well in the Gulf in 1952.

The A-rabs just figured it out now.

In a way, the assassination was probably a message from the Mossad to the Arab princelings:

We Mossadniks can do anything we want right in front of you, and there’s nothing you can do about it but stamp your feet.

All your hotel are belong to us.
