Tea partiers mix their messages at a tax-day rally near the Washington Monument

The Tea Party Express arrived in Washington and other major cities Thursday to protest taxes, government spending, and burgeoning deficits. Activists took to the streets around Capitol Hill with their signs and costumes to tell Congress and the Obama administration that they weren't going to take it anymore. The tea party has a message to send to elected officials in Washington. It's just a little contradictory at times.

A recent New York Times/CBS News pollfound that tea-party supporters are disproportionately older, richer, better-educated, white males. The poll also revealed that most tea partiers felt their tax rate for this year was "fair," but at rallies across the country yesterday, activists called for tax cuts. At the rally in Washington, Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said the country was "overtaxed" and warned that the government was "coming to get more." Tea partiers may want less spending and smaller government, but those who are older don't want to give up Social Security or Medicare—the NYT poll revealed that 62 percent think Social Security and Medicare are worth the taxpayers' money.

They don't want to promote violence, but they use bellicose language and metaphors. Speakers at the tax-day rally weren't hesitant to yell vitriolic rhetoric into microphones, calling their compatriots an "army" and telling them to "unite, fight, and battle." Speakers often referred to the tea party as troops fighting a war.

I don’t remember the commie left in the state run “media” picking apart all the anti-war/anti-Bush protesters like this. Weird. Must be a commie thing.

And therefore must be evil.

Thank God this lame reporter has never been to church. A few bars of "Onward, Christian Soldiers," and imagine what the story would say. What a pack of maroons.

Also my dear Freeper Friends worldwide, but especially right there at ringside in the USA, learn from the great ones like Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel and others.

We can take this anti-Communist, pro-Freedom movement BIG TIME.

I mean, over the next six months, we can multiply TEA PARTY MEMBERSHIP by even twice or three or even four times, and swell public rallies to even larger sizes.

Great gains were made in Eastern European socialist countries even a) WITHOUT a totally free press and widespread independent news sources; b)WITH strict gun control limits on The People; c) WITH a large occupying Soviet Army watching every move, and d) WITH a Western liberal intelligentsia and US Democratic Party generally ambivalent and unsupportive of them.

How much less free are we in the USA in 2010 compared to Communist Poland and Communist Czechoslovakia in 1980-1990 timeframe? We have FAR LESS IMPEDIMENTS AT THIS TIME IN OUR HISTORY, with the exception of our own lethargy and lack backbone of getting all of our relatives and neighbors involved.

But they, the victors of Eastern Europe, had IMMENSE COURAGE AND BRAINPOWER even despite official Communist media slanders or ignoring them or arrests and even deaths (Father Jerzy Popiełuszko), but they pressed on until absolute victory, filling up city square after city square with hundreds of thousands.

We may well have to do the same, as well as beat the living pulp out of them at the polls in November and thereafter. Here, let this video of the Solidarity song 'Mury' with accompanying photos tell the story. Try not to cry.

Take Heart, Freepers! Take Heart, Tea Partiers!

In fact, I think a delegation of senior Tea Party leaders from the several states should fly to Eastern Europe and meet with these valiant veterans and tacticians of peacefully toppling the Soviet Union and it's satellites, and see if they can get endorsements as well as professionally retained consulting from these seasoned leaders who led massive crowds to victory over Socialism and Communism. Just my take.

Together, we will massively and peaceably PUT AN END TO THIS REGIME OF BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA and the rest of his Marxist-Leninist imposters who have found their way to the pinnacle of American Power--for the time being at least.

Older = wiser
richer = successful in life
better-educated = knowledgeable
white = they were born that way
males = taking the role they should

Sounds to me like people ought to listen to them...

Kinda like nobel prize winners.

Or neurosurgeons.

Or concertmasters.

Or astronauts.

Or the inventors of the light bulb, laser, Xerox copier, digital computer.

Of the gyrocompass. Of the airplane. Of air conditioning.

Of the telephone. Of the internet. Of the light-emitting diode. Of the liquid crystal display.

Of magnetic resonance imaging.

Of antibiotics.

Kind of like the discoverer of electricity. Of the electron. Of the proton and the neutron.

Of the theory of relativity.

Like the man who went to war over ending slavery in the United states.

Don’t fret about the garbage in newsweak. There were probably more people at the Dallas Tea Party than there are people who will read the issue this week.

...but those who are older don't want to give up Social Security or Medicare

That is a ridiculous argument. People paid into these systems for 45 years. Now we are supposed to give up all return on that "investment"? We had to seriously forego investing in our own futures because we were coerced into paying into these morally bankrupt systems.

I'm sure most or all young Tea Party "members" would gladly give up the forced "investment" in exchange for managing their own fiscal future. And we could create tiered structures for opting out. Those 20 - 30 could opt out entirely, those 30 - 50 could opt out partially, those over 50 would not be able to opt out. Also, increase tax-sheltered savings plans for everybody plus eliminate the threat of any government take over of private retirement savings. There are ways out of these evil socialist traps.

Good grief, Newsweak? It’s hard to believe that thing is still around.
I think even my barber cancelled it years ago.

"white males"

Maybe, but "You don't have to be white to budget right!"

Case in point: Detroit's black Mayor Dave Bing.

On Tax Day, in an interview on WJR radio, Bing made this budget related statement: "It's not rocket science! You just gotta have the will to get it done. We can't keep spending money we don't have. So we've made the necessary cuts where we can."

Those in the Tea Party movement certainly don't agree on everything, but cleary 100% of Tea Party supporters would agree with Bing's statement. A standing "O" to Mayor Bing for his statement, and welcome to Tea Party support on this issue Mr. Mayor, because what you said is what we are all about.
