White House Struggles To Make 'Tax-Cutter' Label Stick

By Martin Vaughan Dow Jones Newswires

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- As thousands of people prepare to hit the streets Thursday to protest high taxes and government spending, the Obama administration is struggling to remind voters that its policies in its first year resulted in lower taxes for most.

In factsheets and reports timed for tax day, April 15, the White House says the federal stimulus legislation delivered $100 billion in tax cuts to individuals. It did so mostly through a $400-per-adult tax cut, and a tax credit for first-time home buyers.

To put that in perspective, the signature tax-cut legislation of President George W. Bush delivered about $137 billion in tax cuts in the first two years the law was in effect, according to 2001 Joint Committee on Taxation estimates adjusted for inflation.

But administration officials are having trouble getting their message heard. Polling data released this week by Rasmussen Reports found that 66% of respondents believe they are taxed too much.

"The American people know better," said Rep. Mike Pence (R., Ind.) at a press conference Wednesday organized by Americans for Tax Reform, a conservative group. "They know this administration and its Democratic colleagues tax too much, borrow too much and spend too much."

Administration officials "are probably frustrated that there are many people who, if asked, would say the Obama administration has raised their taxes," said James Horney, director of fiscal policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. "They look at the reality and say, wait a minute, why are we not getting credit for this?"

It did so mostly through a $400-per-adult tax cut,

They didn't 'cut' squat. All they did was temporarily decrease the percentage witheld from your paycheck.

My taxes went up after 0bamatrol passed.
That’s not a tax cut, and I don’t make over $250k.

Obama, a “Tax-Cutter?” Don’t make me laugh.

I’ve never made much more than $40K in my life. My income is down almost $5K this year and instead of the usual refund of a couple hundred dollars, I am paying in almost $1,000.00.

And, we were supposed to have received a tax cut?

To put that in perspective, the signature tax-cut legislation of President George W. Bush delivered about $137 billion in tax cuts in the first two years the law was in effect, according to 2001 Joint Committee on Taxation estimates adjusted for inflation.

Bush cuts were two fold -- one that worked and the other that flopped. The working one was a cut in the tax rates for everyone and included capital gains tax cuts. The one that flopped was the tax rebate -- a one time deal. Obama's "cut" was mostly a one time deal. Plus, other taxes were raised at each and every opportunity. Further, Bush cuts were to fix an economy. Obama tax cuts were meant to provide an 8 second sound bite.

Polling data is proving that Americans know what is going on.

A $ 400 ONE TIME TAX CREDIT limited to people who make $ 75,000 or less is in no way considered a tax cut. it is a joke.

LMAO

An extra 8 bucks a week in your paycheck, and then higher taxes on everything else.

They’re pissed that Americans aren’t stupid enough.

I’m not average I guess, we paid more. AMT took a bite this time, for the first time.

I can’t imagine journalists who are supposed to write this happy stuff didn’t pay more this year.

. . . temporarily decrease the percentage withheld from your paycheck.

I've been looking for an on-line article from a "reputable news outlet" that proves this but have not been able to find one. Do you have a source so I can prove it to my Liberal friend?

This is a perfect illustration contrasting the difference between a "tax cut" and a "tax rate cut".

To Democrats, "cutting taxes" involves sending federal money from the Treasury to a citizen. To Republicans, "cutting taxes" is lower the rate of taxation so that less money goes to Washington.

It is OK for Muslims to lie to the “infidels.” That means us, folks.

So, in his mind, lying is just okey dokey.
