Barney Frank gets a high-altitude haranguing on health care

Barney Frank has enemies, even 30,000 feet in the air.

Flying back to Boston from LA yesterday, the congressman was assailed by a pair of ophthalmologists upset about the health care reform bill. An argument ensued that prompted some passengers to wonder if the plane might be forced to land.

"No one was calming things down and people were standing up shouting," said Brooke Sexton, who was seated seven rows behind Barney.

Accustomed as he is to being conservatives's favorite bad guy, Frank mostly ignored the doctors's taunts, Sexton said, but the congressman's partner, Jim Ready, did not.

The problem started soon after the ophthalmologists - two sisters on their way to a conference in Boston - boarded the Virgin flight. When they discovered that Frank was sitting nearby, the women loudly dissed the landmark health care bill as an "Obamanation." (Frank was returning from LA, where he'd received an award from the Greenlining Institute, an economic development group for minorities, and appeared on Jay Leno's show.)

"They wanted to talk to me, but I apologized and said I like to read and watch on planes," Frank told us todday. "They began to talk louder and that's when Jimmy (Ready) said, 'If you're trying to be bitchy, you're doing a good job."

Needless to say, the women didn't appreciate the remark, and things got heated. (Attempts to locate or ID the women were unsuccessful.) Sexton, who's an HR director for the UK-based retailer All Saints Spitalfields, said flight attendants weren't working hard enough to diffuse the situation, so she got involved.

"The women had been drinking, and they were crying and shouting," Sexton said. "They were clearly the antagonizers, and Mr. Frank was kind of minding his own business."

Not that I'm a fan of Barney Frank, but I think I am on his side in this escapade.

During the House Financial Services Full Committee Hearing on "Recent Events in the Credit and Mortgage Markets and Possible Implications for U.S. Consumers and the Global Economy",  Chairman Barney Frank left the hearing in order to attend a meeting in support of legislation that would force American employers to hire homosexuals.   That says a lot about Barney's priorities.

When would you consider it appropriate to confront a representative?

At his offices, at his town hall meetings, at public functions, at his meetings and conferences, and on Capitol Hill.

Verbally assaulting the pervert freak while on a plane home or wherever is just low class, and is no better than what happened to Romney a few weeks back. It was wrong then and it is wrong now.

And quite frankly, judging from some of the hysterical responses on this thread, it's becoming apparent that there are many on our side who are on the brink of crossing a very dangerous line that should probably not be crossed.

Lately I think it is worthwhile to question every incident, especially the ones which are aspiring to be “significant”.
This is too damn convenient. Barney gets to be noted for an award, he gets to end the story with a pithy little quote, and Barney, who never seems to shut up otherwise, keeps his face shut through the whole argument?
Barney’s buddy gets to sass some guy as “Santa Claus” for no explicated reason and we never hear any more about it?
The two haranguers can’t be located or ID’ed?
Most of tale gets told by “Brooke Sexton”. She might work for a UK retailer. Or she might be the leftist radical in the film “Original Radicals”, editor of Conspire magazine etc. I can’t tell yet. Plus she jumps in from 7 rows back?
Sounds like a minor squabble got juiced up to make a meatier article.
I’ve been hearing it for the last decade and now its my turn; I question the timing.
