April 11, 2010 Richard Dawkins: I Will Arrest Pope Benedict XVI Marc Horne
Atheist campaigner Richard Dawkins RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain for crimes against humanity.
Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.
The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998.
The Pope was embroiled in new controversy this weekend over a letter he signed arguing that the good of the universal church should be considered against the defrocking of an American priest who committed sex offences against two boys. It was dated 1985, when he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which deals with sex abuse cases.

If the facts matter then this is an untrue framing of the choice.
.........”It’s the “defending the church is the same as defending your faith mentality”............
I think oftentimes there is confusion over the word “church”.
Most recognize that a church is a building where believers meet and worship God. It also often is used when one means the whole body of believers under Christ no matter what their denomination affiliation might be.... But it does seems some catholics do see their church with seemingly more faith in their church before that of Christ or fellow believers as a whole. So when conversing I think it is important to discern this in individuals otherwise there is confusion and misunderstandings.....It is just my observation on some of the threads.
Dark sides, such as trading in indulgences, dark sides such as carving up territory between petty rulers, dark sides such as the very issue that’s confronting the RCC right now. Dark sides, such as almost all of Islam, or any other religion.
There will always be corruption when humans indulge in any activity. Please don’t pretend as if the RCC has never had a tainted history.
If you want to be fanatical about not acknowledging past misdeeds, that is fine, but truth has a stubborn way of revealing itself.
All my past arguments on this thread have been vindicated either by myself, or by others, including the last one regarding the complete incapability of Asia Minor to withstand the Muslim Hordes.
There is no point in carrying out this discussion with you.

JCB.
For some reason I thought the authorities weren't notified because who ever was in charge had found out through a confession.
In many of these cases, it was the inaction of the individual dioceses themselves - because the bishops did not need the approval of the Holy See to move these priests to places where they would have no contact with children or to move them out of active ministry altogether.
It's easy to understand in a huge organization why every personnel decision doesn't have to go to the top. What's hard to figure is why nobody thought going to the police was a good idea, or am I wrong and most crimes were reported?
The best defense is a good offense.
Or (as I like to do on controversial threads) here's a quote from Calvin and Hobbes:
How many boards
would the Mongols hoard
if the Mongol hordes
got bored?
Cheers!
Do we really have to be so PC that the obvious needs to be stated with every post. Of course all allegations need to be investigated and if the individual is found guilty why not worry about the perpetrators human dignity behind prison walls.
And yes, pastoral care after guilt is proven SHOULD be from behind prison walls - I won't disagree with you on that. Yet it's still more complicated than just "forcing the bums out."
Only if we make it so.
Back to work in the morning, it'll likely be a week or two...
Cheers!
Hmm, I either forgot that or didn’t know it!!!
More evidence (as if any is needed) of his real reason for attacking the Catholic Church.
They think they’re fooling people, but I doubt very many are fooled, except fellow fiends in human form.
So well put.
I was assuming you are RC.
No disagreement with that!
Thanks for the limerick. That’s one that is going to go into the archives!
Why?
Nor will I villify the Pope.
If he was involved in covering up these crimes why not vilify him?
No sweat.
Thanks for your kind reply.
Now now . . . trying to peddle the stark truth again, I see.
LOL.
LUB
INDEED.
I am certain you feel enraged by the local priests' reprehensible actions. But it is a leap to accuse this Pope without adequate proof. You must surely realize the loss to the world if every Catholic is held to a standard of absolute perfection by the world's atheists until the Church is extinguished, while the atheists do not hold themselves to any standards whatsoever.
A worldwide organization requires strong leadership at many levels below the Pope. The Archbishops should have taken care of this problem.
