Mitt Romney Wins GOP Presidential Straw Poll

NEW ORLEANS -- Mitt Romney won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership conference here Saturday in a victory that will be taken as a sign of the former Massachusetts governor's strength as a 2012 presidential candidate.

That's because the 2008 GOP presidential hopeful elected to skip the conference to continue his book tour.

Romney triumphed by a single vote over Ron Paul, who took second place 439 votes to 438. Both men won 24 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

Goes to show you how ‘out of touch’ these folks are from the rest of the country.

People mistakenly believe that because Mitt is an investment banker that he must therefore know something about economics.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Bankers — especially investment bankers — generally know NOTHING about economics; they are not in a position to “save” the U.S. economy from decline.

Mitt brought socialized medicine to Massachusetts. Does anyone really believe that he would work to repeal zerocare nationally?

Don’t know about Mitt’s racial history, but I’d say that the “that’s racist!” strategy would more likely invite a major voter backlash than help Obama. If that’s what Obama is counting on, he’s in bad shape.

The GOP chooses their presidential candidates based on seniority. It’s Mitts turn...

************************

Yes. This got us such inspiring candidates as “Amnesty for draft dodgers” Ford . . .

“Kinder, gentler New World Order” Bush . . .

and “Bob Dole says I am Bob Dole” Bob Dole . . .

and “Amnesty for undocumented workers and drug runners” McCain . . .

A great system. Czarist Russia used the same one for senior military ranks. Same results.

I agree. Before the century is out I expect a withered GOP will merge with the democrats into a single party which represents government employees, unions and the welfare class. People who will insist upon their liberty will go to a second party.

I think you're correct...assuming the US doesn't balkanize. There are very divergent and irreconcilable groups who will not give up. They used to view themselves as Americans first, and because of that they could coexist. Many no longer weight being American very high...their allegiance is to their smaller tribe, and if anything has grown more extreme and inflexible.

Mitt created “RomneyCare” in Massachusetts-socialized medicine throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It’s already full of problems, and Mitt is part of who people blame for its problems, be it fair, accurate, or not. “RomneyCare” will finish off any serious chances for a Mitt Romney presidential victory in ‘12 and/or beyond.

What do you think drove him out of the office that he wanted to be reelected to, he slinked out with 34% approval.

Well, Paul wouldn't win a general. But I do think Romney's chances are better. Yeah, he'd take low blows on his religion, but Romney knows how to campaign and after the mess Obama has made, Romney would get inde and dem votes, especially with his stance on immigration.

The more I look at the mess this country is in, the more I'm looking not only to wipe out Obama and his agenda, but we need to turn this country around -- radically. I want someone who is capable of making serious inroads toward dismantling the statist apparatus. Gingrich would have that capability -- he could set an agenda conforming to constitutional principles and see it through. I think Romney would also, but I'm not completely confident of his will to do it.

The MSM and the Democrats would love to see the Republicans nominate Romney. They will do everything they can to make it happen, simply because they know full well, he doesn’t have a chance in the world of getting elected.

Unfortunately, this November, 34% of the vote could be enough for a Deval Patrick re-election as Governor of Massachusetts.
