The terror group pledged to target the match between England and the USA in South Africa in June, warning "hundreds" of fans could die.
A branch of al-Qaeda which last year killed British hostage Edwin Dyer, 61, in Mali made the threats.
They also vowed to target resorts, hotels and car parks used by supporters during the tournament. And they claimed explosive devices which cannot be detected by security scans would be used.
The threats appear on al-Qaeda-linked websites. A statement said: "How beautiful would the game between England and the USA be when broadcast live from a stadium full of spectators - when the sound of an explosion rumbles through the stands. The resulting death toll is in the dozens and hundreds - Allah willing."
Security around England stars such as Frank Lampard is likely to be stepped up as they play in Cape Town and other cities.
The threats from al-Qaeda's North African network were last night being taken seriously by terror experts.
Neil Doyle said: "They have a track record for violence."

Not clear that Al-Qaida has the technology to do what they are saying. Nobody in their right mind (except maybe our president) would telegraph a "war" strategy. My guess is that they will disrupt things with a few bombs if they can get away with it, but are more interested in scaring people into not attending the World Cup.
the link went down for a second but its back up and running
Why does Obama keep telling the world what our troops in Afghanistan are going to do, before they do it?
Is he planning to get them killed?
Or, is it really because they want to clear the villages and get the locals on the side of the US troops?
Ya think?
haha thats a great comment
Our Central Contolling President wants to micro manage everything including the military. He does not trust the military chain of command, so he gives orders directly to the troops, via the MSM.
And you (well, not necessarily you) said he was not a very transparent president!
Islam is a religion of peace and tollerance.
Micromanaging Vietnam worked so well.
On the up side, if they attacked the world cup, South America would have no mosques or muslim people by dawn the next day.
The title you made up for The Sun article which you copied onto your blog
" AL-QAEDA have vowed to bomb the World Cup - with England players top of their hitlist. "
had to be replaced with the original published article's title found on The Sun's site.
The link to your blog has been removed and replaced with a link to the published article on The Sun.
Yeah, except “ commander zero”.
“Not clear that Al-Qaida has the technology to do what they are saying.”
That’s something that has baffled me for quite a while. Anyone with a decent engineering degree could do some real damage if they wanted to. AQ certainly could have sponsored a student or two since 9-11. Or is islam really that antiethical to learning even militarily applicable non-quaranic knowledge?
Neil Doyle is a genius.
Islam has had a stunting effect on just about all that's good and right for around 1,400 years now. I think if Mohammad had never been born, some other thing would have risen up to represent humanity's savage side.
Would they be announcing it beforehand if they really had the capability?
