Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak, the congressman who led anti-abortion rights Democrats in the House during health care negotiations, will retire this year, CBS News has learned. He is expected to announce his plans later this morning.
Had Stupak sought re-election, he would have faced challengers from both the left and the right backed by interest groups angered by Stupak's health care vote.
Stupak negotiated with Democratic leaders down to the eleventh hour for stricter abortion language in the health care bill, but he ultimately voted for it after President Obama agreed to sign an executive order assuring the new laws will keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.
That prompted the conservative Tea Party Express to launch a $250,000 ad campaign against Stupak this week. The group also scheduled a handful of stops on its bus tour in Stupak's district.
On the left, the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America has been working to defeat Stupak and instead elect his Democratic primary challenger Connie Saltonstall.
Like many other congressmen, Stupak received violent threats from citizens after his health care vote. However, the Michigan Democrat came under particularly intense scrutiny because of his role in the abortion debate.
Brave Sir Robin ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!
The “Pro-Lifer” that is a big supporter if taxfunded Ploanned Parenthood is retiring.
I guess he gets a better pension and benefits if he retires instead of loses.
The liar.
ok, since the thread I posted this idea on was pulled, I’ll repost it here.
Can we Americans who are fed up with Fedzilla and our Representatives who do not represent us alter other races dramatically by launching similar ad campaigns to the one mentioned in the article that the TEA party had announced against Stupidpak?
I would think that $250,000 worth of ads in a House race could go a long way in putting some of these jerks out of a job. Even the announcement of that campaign forced this piece of garbage to seek the safety of retirement! Also, $250,000 times the number of dirtbags that need to retire spread out over the entire nation of angry citizens would not be a very crushing burden.
I nominate Ms. Kosmas of Florida to be the next recipient of such loving affection.
“Stupak received violent threats from citizens after his health care vote.”
I'll bet this will be used by Democrats as his reason for retiring.
I am sure that swiss bank account that was set up for him by Obama is gonna come in handy as well.
Cushy cabinet post coming...
Let’s follow him and find out how many pieces of silver he got from The Regime.
I love the Friday news dumps.
Good riddance.
What a hapless dumbunny. He made himself the most notorious man in Washington — despised by both right and left — for nothing.

I think you will win that bet!
Democrats know that he will loose that district if he stays in.....they will put someone else up who has a better chance of winning...Just like they did with good old dodd
You are correct. On November 3, HHS Secretary Sebilius will declare that all insurers in the US will be required to cover abortion in every policy.
Guaranteed.
Good riddance. Stupak is a liar and lefty who put himself out there as being pro-life but found party loyalty more important than the lives that will be taken with federal-funded abortion. Go away and don’t come back, you loser.
Sic Semper Tyrannis!
