Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak, the congressman who led anti-abortion rights Democrats in the House during health care negotiations, will retire this year, CBS News has learned. He is expected to announce his plans later this morning.
Had Stupak sought re-election, he would have faced challengers from both the left and the right backed by interest groups angered by Stupak's health care vote.
Stupak negotiated with Democratic leaders down to the eleventh hour for stricter abortion language in the health care bill, but he ultimately voted for it after President Obama agreed to sign an executive order assuring the new laws will keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.
That prompted the conservative Tea Party Express to launch a $250,000 ad campaign against Stupak this week. The group also scheduled a handful of stops on its bus tour in Stupak's district.
On the left, the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America has been working to defeat Stupak and instead elect his Democratic primary challenger Connie Saltonstall.
Like many other congressmen, Stupak received violent threats from citizens after his health care vote. However, the Michigan Democrat came under particularly intense scrutiny because of his role in the abortion debate.
What a disgusting creature.
He condemns babies to death and then retires on his big pension.
Getting a cushy job in the administration?
Acts 1:18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
Will his new ‘rat/commie replacement win the General election in Nov?
Stupak could have been an American “hero” of sorts; instead, his is a name that will live in infamy — and now, cowardice — among American patriots.
He’s probably set for life. No way I believe that he sold his vote for a measly 700k.
The blood’s not just on his hands.
One of the core points of this “healthcare” law was to make sure that EVERYONE in the country had blood on their hands.
Why else would it require “at least $1 of every premium payment” go to funding abortion?
Countdown until he is named ambassador to some Caribbean island begins now...
Man with no principles, no values, no character, decides to retire —— And that’s a good thing.
Character counts, it’s all that does count when trying to decide who to vote for. Put top of your list.
Character, that single word you will never associate with Obama.
Good.
I’m not sure about other districts but this will mean at least two Michigan districts will swing republican this time out. The 1st and 7th are likely GOP pickups this year.
Anybody got news from other districts?
Exactlty! I had been saying for months prior to the actual Obamacare vote that it was a done deal and a foregone conclusion - none of these Dems that voted for it care if they get reelected or not.
All the drama was nothing but political theater while they negotiated what their rewards would be for giving up their elected office for the sake of the Communist takeover of our country. They have no worries about their future - they helped engineer a massive government takeover of our economy and they will be richly rewarded.
We are NOT citizens of a representative democracy! We are subjects of a ruling Marxist plutocracy that only care about their own wealth and power. Our fate was sealed many decades ago when we allowed governance to gradually become a lucrative full-time, lifelong career.
He would do well to stop being a “Pretend Catholic” while he is at it.
He must have been reading his internal polls again.
After his recent betrayal, he couldn’t get elected as a local dog catcher.
Great!
Judas left the table early also.
And the leadership would do well to impose some “Church discipline” on him in order to send a message to others about the abortion issue,
and perhaps save some souls.
Stupidhak bites the dust. Soon to be followed by the rest of the so called Blue Dogs and their master Obama...Good Riddance!
