Religious Orthodox leaders have always been submited to the political power and several attempts of alliance with Rome and the Pope were impeached by the Secular power.
Cf Concilium of Florence which nearly reached the union of Moscow,Byzantium and Rome and could have stopped the Turkish attack of Byzantium....
There would be also a lot to say about Byzantine christianity weakened by divisions and endless quarrels.There again the religious power was to close to the political power
