Qaeda Group Threatens to Attack World Cup

SNIPPET: "The North African terror group al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has threatened to attack this summer's World Cup games in South Africa.

"All those countries are part of the Zionist-Crusader campaign against Islam," the statement says.

The group says they will use some undetectable explosive that will be able to circumvent security checkpoints at the games."

SNIPPET: “The bombings that killed 74 soccer fans watching the World Cup championship between Spain and the Netherlands on Sunday night had all the earmarks of a classic al-Qaida operation: They targeted large crowds of bystanders; the victims were multinational, with Irish, Indian, American, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Ugandan nationals among the dead; the blasts occurred almost simultaneously in two places; and it happened on a date ending in 11.

The attacks also signaled another al-Qaida junior partner in terrorism — al-Shabab of Somalia, whose ties to al-Qaida are similar to Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia or the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Al-Shabab, which claimed “credit” for the suicide attacks, already controls a third of Somalia’s land and has ambitions of conquering all of it. African Union troops, which support the weak Somali government, are all that stands in their way.

“Al-Shabab was behind the blasts,” said Ali Mohamud Rage, the terrorist gang’s spokesman. “Thanks to our martyrs who carried out the attacks.””

On July 6, the Somali group al-Shabaab publicly issued specific threats against the Governments of Uganda and Burundi and then claimed responsibility for detonating bombs in Uganda over the weekend. Al-shabaab maintains that it considers Burundi its enemy. While the U.S. Embassy is not changing its security posture, we would like to take this opportunity to urge U.S. citizens to review the Department of State’s Country Specific Information for Burundi as well as the Worldwide Caution in effect.”

“Uganda attack carried out by Shabaab cell named after slain al Qaeda leader”

SNIPPET: “The top leader of Shabaab said that the deadly attacks in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, were carried out by a cell named after an al Qaeda and Shabaab leader slain in Somalia last year. Sheikh Muktar Abdelrahman Abu Zubeyr, Shabaab’s spiritual leader, also threatened to carry out further attacks in the neighboring East African counties of Uganda and Burundi if African Union peacekeepers are not withdrawn from Somalia.”

Zubeyr, in an audiotape released today to Somali media, said the Saleh Ali Nabhan Brigade carried out the deadly bombings in Kampala that targeted soccer fans at a restaurant and a rugby club as they watched the World Cup final match on July 12. In those attacks, 74 civilians were killed and more than 60 were wounded.

Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan was al Qaeda’s top leader in East Africa, and he also held a top position in Shabaab. In the summer of 2008, Nabhan was instrumental in reaching out to al Qaeda’s top leadership to broker a merger between Shabaab and the global terror group. He was killed in a US special operations raid in Somalia on Sept. 14, 2009.”

Much-loved Ugandan pastor among dead in Kampala World Cup terror blast

KAMPALA, UGANDA (ANS) — A much-loved Ugandan pastor was amongst those killed in last Sunday’s terror blasts that ripped through two locations while people were watching the World Cup final game on television

He was Peter Mutabazi who pastored a local Pentecostal church at Bwaise, in the suburbs of Kampala.

The pastor was amongst the 76 people who were killed, while hundreds were injured.

“On that fatal night, Peter and some visiting American missionaries were seated in the Ethiopian Restaurant where they had gone for dinner and also to watch the World Cup Final,” said Alex Mitala, General Overseer, National Fellowship of Born Again Pentecostal Churches in Uganda.

“Al Shabaab, a terrorist group of extreme Islamic Somalis, claimed responsibility for the bomb blast in which Peter died and also five of the missionaries were seriously injured. The same group are believed to be connected to Al Qaeda.

“Peter left behind Alice, his widow and five children. His burial took place on July 13th, in Mpigi District Central Uganda, where I originally planted that local church and later handed it over to P.A.G mission. We shall all miss Peter.”

On his Facebook page, Peter Mutabazi wrote, “We live in one of the biggest slums of Kampala the capital city of Uganda.”

Now his many friends in that slum area will be mourning the untimely death of their friend.

“Former Raleigh man dies in Uganda bombings”

SNIPPET: “KAMPALA, Uganda — An American who recently lived in Raleigh for a year was the lone American killed when explosions tore through crowds watching the World Cup final Sunday at a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant in Kampala, Uganda, killing at least 74 people.

Nathan Henn, 25, who worked with Invisible Children, a San Diego-based aid group that helps child soldiers in Africa, was killed on the rugby field. Henn was a native of Wilmington, Del., but his family moved to Raleigh in 2007, and he lived here for about a year, his sister, Brynne Henn, said this morning in a telephone interview.”

FBI and Uganda Police Seek Assistance Identifying 7/11 Bombers

On July 11, 2010, Uganda was the target of a series of terrorist attacks in its capital city, Kampala, in which over 70 individuals were killed. The Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab took responsibility for these attacks. The first bomb exploded at approximately 10:30 p.m. at an Ethiopian restaurant in Kabalagala. The second bomb exploded at approximately 11:20 p.m. at a rugby club. A third bomb also exploded at almost the same time at the rugby club. The first two bombs were thought to have been triggered by suicide bombers. At both venues, victims were gathered to watch the final World Cup soccer match.

Following the terrorist attacks, Uganda authorities made a request through the U.S. Embassy in Kampala for a team from the FBI to assist with their investigation. The FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) deployed a team of agents, analysts, and forensic experts to assist the Ugandan authorities. Included were members of the FBI from other parts of the country with expertise in specific portions of the investigation such as evidence collection and explosive analysis.

The investigation being conducted by Uganda with support from the FBI is ongoing. As part of the investigation, the FBI and Uganda law enforcement officials are seeking information regarding the identity of the two suicide bombers. Photos have been reconstructed to demonstrate how the two suspected male bombers may have appeared. If anyone has information on the attacks or can identity the bombers, they are requested to contact the Uganda Police or the FBI.

Terrorist activity must be stopped and the police force will do everything possible to keep our citizens and visitors safe. I thank the FBI, the British High Commission, New Scotland Yard, and Interpol among the many others nations and agencies that are assisting us at this time. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Don Borelli of the New York office is serving as the deputy commander and overseeing the daily operations. Agent Borelli stated, “The New York office of the FBI brings a wealth of experience in investigating terrorism cases. Working closely with our Uganda law enforcement partners we will do everything possible to help find the perpetrators of this horrific event.”

Three Kenyans have been charged with the murders of 76 people killed when bombs exploded as they watched the World Cup on TV in Kampala, Uganda.

Hussein Hassan Agad, 27, Mohamed Adan Abdow, 25, and Idris Magondu, 42, were also charged with terrorism and 10 counts of attempted murder.

They have yet to enter pleas and will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 27 August.

Al-Shabab, a Somali Islamist group, said it carried out the attacks.

Ugandan peacekeepers are in Somalia, helping the weak, UN-backed government against al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda.

The African Union this week pledged to boost its peacekeeping force in Somalia by 4,000 troops, after a summit meeting in Kampala, which was overshadowed by the attack.

Only Uganda and Burundi have so far sent troops to the Somali capital, Mogadishu and al-Shabab had threatened to attack both countries.

‘Islamic preacher’

The explosions on 11 July, which also injured about 70 people, ripped through a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant as football fans watched the last few minutes of the World Cup final.

The three men, all residents of Kenya, appeared on Friday in a Kampala magistrates court.

The charge sheet identified Hussein Hassan Agad as “a preacher of Islam”, while Idris Magondu was identified as an employee of a trading company in Nairobi, Kenya.

The men were charged with 89 offences. They face 61 counts of murder for those killed at the Kyadondo Rugby Club and 15 counts for those killed at the restaurant.

“Al Qaeda advises Shabaab to keep low profile on links, attack US interests”

SNIPPET: “Al Qaeda’s senior leadership has advised Shabaab, its affiliate in Somalia, to downplay links between the two terror groups and suggested that future attacks be directed at US interests in East Africa.”

SNIPPET: “Shabaab’s double suicide attack in Uganda on July 11 was well received by al Qaeda’s top leadership, who want Shabaab to continue to hitting US interests in Africa.

“Al Qaeda is pleased with the double suicide attack in Uganda, but suggested Shabaab reserve future strikes at US interests in the region,” the official said.

The July 11 double suicide attack in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, killed 74 civilians as they watched the World Cup’s final soccer match. The mastermind of the Kampala attacks, Isah Ahmed Luyima, said he executed the bombings with the intent of maximizing US deaths.

“I targeted places where many Americans go,” Luyima said in a press conference hosted by Ugandan police on Aug. 12. “I was made to believe that Americans were responsible for the suffering of Muslims all over the world.”

The Shabaab cell that carried out the Uganda attack called itself the Saleh Ali Nabhan Brigade. Saleh Ali Slaeh Nabhan was a top al Qaeda and Shabaab leader who has been indicted by the US for his involvement in the 1998 bombings at the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Nabhan was indicted with several top al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri. Nabhan served as Shabaab’s top military commander before US special operations forces killed him in a raid in southern Somalia in September 2009.”

“Uganda frees 18 World Cup bomb suspects”

SNIPPET: “A Ugandan court has acquitted 18 people charged over the World Cup bomb attacks that killed more than 70 people in the capital, Kampala, in July.

Three of those released, most of whom are of Somali or Kenyan origin, were re-arrested on separate charges.

State prosecutors said 17 other suspects would be tried on charges of terrorism, murder and attempted murder in connection with the bombings.

SNIPPET: “An explosive found in a Nairobi matatu (taxi) was similar to the one used in a Kampala attack and two city bombings, a court heard on Tuesday.

The object weighing 10kgs, was an improvised explosive device designed to be exploded at a target by either a suicide bomber or by remote control via a cellphone, a police officer, who presented bomb experts’ findings, said.

“The device was complete with all the components of an improvised explosive device and was designed to function to maximum destruction of property and life,” the officer said. He told the court that the device was a replica of what was used in previous terror bombings such as the Kampala one during the 2010 World Cup finals, Moi Avenue’s Assanands building blast and the Eastleigh car bombing.”
