7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Sumatra, Indonesia
(Excerpt) Read more at foxnews.com ...
Wondering if all these are foreshocks to a really big one somewhere. Earth is definitely unsettled these past few months with rather significant quakes - and not all involving the same plate.
really? is it that off season or something??
Did Zero’s statue survive, or have they already taken it down?
Maui is a disappointment unless you like expensive hotels and golf.
The Big Island has it all!
My feelings too. There are always a lot of earthquakes, but there seems to be a lot of high intensity earthquakes lately. Yikes!
Absolutely not true. There has not been an increase in earthquakes. That is simply the media trying to make a story. Earthquakes have always been and always will be.
Millions have died in quakes in the past. These quakes are nothing compared to some of the most deadly ones on record.
I was just reading up on the 2004 one off Sumatra- that one was located 100 odd miles off the island - for some reason I’d thought it was much closer.
I would not worry about Hawaii. There is a lot of surface land mass between the quake area and the Hawaiian Islands. That big Chile quake was a direct line and did absolutely nothing in Hawaii.
Poor economy, they are hurting.
We got 7 nights, airfare plus a very nice resort, for $1200 a person but you could do it for even less, under $1000 a person.
Don’t eat at expensive places, like the resort, and there lots of free things to do!
I am thinking the same thing, since Haiti there have been how many? I have lost count!
It’s really hard as the areas reporting, and precision of measurement gets better and better. I wouldn’t hold my breath though. But my guy feeling is there’ll be a big one (meaning 9.0+) before too long. Now those are rare, but things feel to be heating up. But that’s only my opinion, based on, well my gut. LOL

There are an average of 18 Magnitude 7.0+ earthquakes per year.
With this quake in Indonesia, we’ve had 6 M 7.0+ this year.
Were done with a little over 25% of the year.
In an “average” year we’d have had 4 to 5 Magnitude 7+ earthquakes by now.
We’re running BARELY above average in number of large earthquakes this year, 6 when we should have had 4.5.
This is essentially statistically insignificant.
Strong shallow quake on Sunda straight? I hope people ran for high ground!
Gorbal Warming ...
There is definitely something unusual going on with the Earth’s tectonic plates over the past 10 years or so, particular the Pacific Plate. Many large earthquakes such as this.
Per #72 a tsunami warning has been issued
And they do come in clusters that ebb and flow over decades.
Well, the Mexican quake yesterday and the Indonesian quake today are a complete embarassment for the "Full Moons cause earthquakes!" Jim Berkland-worshipping nutters as we're precisely on a quarter moon at the moment with the least possible lunar tidal influence.
